Jamhuri Day 2024 Doodle – Google Doodles

Todayโ€™s Doodle celebrates Kenyaโ€™s Jamhuri Day! Jamhuri is the Swahili word for โ€œrepublic.โ€ On this day in 1963, Kenya gained its freedom and independence after many years of foreign rule. To further add to the significance of December 12th, the budding nation officially adopted the name โ€œthe Republic of Kenyaโ€ a year later.

On Jamhuri Day, Kenyans attend parades, award ceremonies, dance performances, and more to honor their nationโ€™s progress and prosperity. Many host family gatherings to enjoy the day off with loved ones and share feasts filled with national dishes like ugali (cornmeal porridge), githeri (boiled beans and corn), skuma wiki (sautรฉed greens), and more. All day long, the Kenyan national flag waves high in the sky throughout the country โ€” just like in todayโ€™s artwork.

Happy Jamhuri Day, Kenya!
