Jack Dorsey Launches Bitchat, a Decentralized Messaging Platform

Jack Dorsey, the co-founder of X (formerly Twitter), has unveiled a new decentralized messaging application called Bitchat. This innovative platform operates on Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) mesh networks, allowing users to communicate securely without the need for an internet connection, account, or phone number. Bitchat promises enhanced privacy through end-to-end encryption and offers features such as topic-based conversation rooms and a favorites system, making it a unique addition to the messaging landscape.

Bitchat’s Unique Features

In a recent announcement on X, Dorsey described Bitchat as a โ€œweekend project.โ€ A detailed whitepaper released on GitHub outlines the app’s functionality. Currently, Bitchat is in beta testing through Apple’s TestFlight program, although the available slots filled quickly after the announcement. The app utilizes BLE mesh networking, which facilitates direct peer-to-peer messaging among users within a range of over 300 meters. Each device acts as both a client and server, enabling multi-hop message delivery, which enhances connectivity in close physical proximity.

One of the standout features of Bitchat is its independence from the internet. Dorsey emphasized that this characteristic protects the app from censorship and network outages, making it a reliable choice for users. The decentralized nature of Bitchat means there is no central control or server infrastructure, ensuring that users maintain greater privacy and autonomy over their communications. Messages sent through the app are ephemeral, existing only in device memory by default, with automatic caching for delivery when the recipient becomes available.

Message Retention and Security

Bitchat incorporates a tiered message retention system. Regular messages have a lifespan of 12 hours, while those marked as favorites are stored indefinitely. This feature allows users to prioritize important communications while maintaining a clutter-free messaging experience. Security is a top priority for Bitchat, which employs end-to-end encryption using the Curve25519 elliptic curve and AES-GCM authenticated encryption algorithm. This multi-layered encryption setup ensures that messages remain private and secure during transmission.

Importantly, Bitchat does not require users to provide phone numbers, email addresses, or any permanent identifiers, further enhancing user privacy. This design choice aligns with the app’s goal of creating a secure and anonymous messaging environment.

Engaging Communication Features

Bitchat also includes several interactive features commonly found in other messaging applications. Users can mention others in conversations, allowing for direct notifications about new messages. Additionally, the app supports the creation of rooms for topic-based discussions, similar to channels on platforms like Discord. These rooms can be password-protected, adding an extra layer of security for users who wish to keep their conversations private.
