Jack Brisco: Two-Time NWA World Champion

Jack Brisco (September 21, 1941 – February 1, 2010) was an American amateur and professional wrestler. He was a two-time NWA World Heavyweight Champion and is widely regarded as one of the greatest wrestlers of his era.

Early Life and Education

Freddie Joe Brisco was born in Seminole, Oklahoma, one of five siblings, and was a member of the Chickasaw Nation. He was raised mainly in Blackwell and grew up as a fan of professional wrestlers Lou Thesz, Danny Hodge, and Dick Hutton. At Blackwell High School, Brisco was a three-time Oklahoma state wrestling champion and also played as an all-state fullback on the high school football team.

Career and Achievements

Brisco turned down a football scholarship to the University of Oklahoma to attend Oklahoma State, where he competed in amateur wrestling. During his junior year in 1964, he finished as NCAA runner-up in the 191-pound weight class. In 1965, he won the NCAA Division I national championship, becoming the first Native American to achieve this honor. He was not taken down once during his entire senior season.

Brisco turned professional in 1965 after being contacted by promoter Leroy McGuirk, who had ties to his childhood idol Danny Hodge. His first documented championship came on October 16, 1965, when he defeated Don Kent for the NWA Missouri Junior Heavyweight Championship. He then wrestled across multiple territories, including Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, and Australia, winning regional titles including the Oklahoma Heavyweight Championship and Arkansas Heavyweight Championship.

Moving to Championship Wrestling from Florida in 1969, Brisco won the NWA Florida Southern Heavyweight Championship on February 11 by defeating The Missouri Mauler. He went on to win ten NWA Florida Tag Team Championships, initially with Ciclon Negro and later frequently teaming with his younger brother Gerald, whom he trained in professional wrestling. On July 20, 1973, in Houston, Texas, Brisco won his first NWA World Heavyweight Championship from Harley Race. He held the title until 1975, then regained it for a second reign. Throughout his career, Brisco also held multiple NWA World Tag Team Championships with his brother Gerald.

Notable Events and Milestones

Brisco’s path to the NWA World Heavyweight Championship was marked by a long-running feud with Dory Funk Jr. that began years before their scheduled title match. When Dory Funk Jr. claimed injury from a truck accident and missed their scheduled bout in 1973, the title instead went to Harley Race, whom Brisco then defeated for his first world championship reign.

In the late 1970s, Brisco and his brother Gerald discovered Terry Bollea, who would become known as Hulk Hogan. They introduced Bollea to trainer Hiro Matsuda, playing a key role in launching one of professional wrestling’s most famous careers.

Awards and Honors

Brisco was a two-time All-American amateur wrestler at Oklahoma State. Legendary NWA champion Lou Thesz described him as “one of the toughest and most highly skilled wrestlers of the last 50 years.” Don Leo Jonathan called him “probably the greatest champion of the 20th century.” Brisco is considered one of the greatest wrestlers of his era.
