Is AI Just a Buzzword? New Research Reveals Its Job Impact is More Whisper Than Roar!

In a world buzzing with excitement about artificial intelligence (AI), a recent study has thrown a splash of cold water on the hype. While companies are racing to adopt AI to cut costs and boost efficiency, findings reveal that the technology’s impact on employee hours and pay is surprisingly minimal. This study, conducted by the National Bureau of Economic Research in Denmark, analyzed data from 25,000 workers and found that AI’s presence in the workplace has not led to significant changes in employment dynamics.

The Study’s Findings

The research indicates that AI has had a negligible effect on both hours worked and wages. On average, employees saved about three percent of their time, but only a small portionโ€”between three to seven percentโ€”of productivity gains translated into higher pay. The economists behind the study, Anders Humlum and Emilie Vestergaard, concluded that AI chatbots have not significantly impacted earnings or recorded hours across various occupations.

Who Was Analyzed?

The study examined a diverse group of 25,000 workers from 7,000 different workplaces. These included roles such as accountants, customer support specialists, financial advisors, HR professionals, software developers, and teachersโ€”positions often thought to be at risk of AI disruption. Despite the rapid adoption of AI technologies, the researchers found no evidence of job displacement or significant productivity transformations leading to hefty raises for those using AI tools.

Implications for Companies

These findings may come as a surprise to companies eager to replace human workers with AI. For instance, CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity firm, recently announced plans to cut five percent of its workforce in favor of AI solutions. Similarly, language-learning platform Duolingo stated it would gradually phase out contractors for tasks that AI can handle, echoing a previous shift they made in 2012 towards mobile technology.
