Is a Rs 1 Crore Salary the New Normal? Tech Guru Sparks Debate in India!

In a surprising revelation, a Walmart employee has ignited a lively discussion about salary expectations in the Indian tech industry. The employee claimed that earning an annual salary of Rs 1 crore is becoming increasingly common, especially among tech professionals with just four to five years of experience. This bold statement has led to a flurry of opinions and debates within the tech community.

The Claim That Started It All

The Walmart employee took to the anonymous platform Blind to share their thoughts, stating, “Indian tech salaries have leveled up.” They expressed that, despite having 13 years of experience, achieving a salary of Rs 1 crore felt like an “uphill task” for them. The post included a poll asking users what they considered a decent salary for a data engineer with 13 years of experience.

Mixed Reactions from the Community

Responses to the post were varied. Approximately 38.2% of participants believed that a salary above Rs 1.5 crore was reasonable, while 34.1% felt that Rs 75 lakh was adequate. Interestingly, about 27.6% agreed that earning over Rs 1 crore annually is indeed a decent expectation.

A Closer Look at Salary Norms

The discussion quickly expanded beyond the initial claim. Some users pointed out that the high salaries mentioned might only apply to top-tier product companies. One commenter noted that if all companies were considered, the median salary for professionals with 7-9 years of experience would be around Rs 15 lakh per annum.

Others echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that salaries of Rs 1 crore are more of an exception than the rule for those with less than 10 years of experience. “Very few companies pay that kind of money for that level of experience,” one user remarked, while another highlighted the intense competition for such high-paying roles.
