iOS 26 Enhances Child Account Setup Process

Apple has unveiled plans to enhance parental controls in its upcoming iOS 26 update, set to launch later this year. Following its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2025), the tech giant revealed improvements to the setup process for Child Accounts, alongside more detailed age ratings on the App Store. These updates aim to empower parents by allowing them to share their child’s age range with apps, ensuring access to age-appropriate content. Additionally, a new feature called Communication Limits will enable parents to approve contacts for their children, extending support to third-party applications.

Streamlined Child Account Setup

Apple has made significant strides in simplifying the setup of Child Accounts for users under the age of 13. According to a recent announcement, a child’s account can now be easily linked to a parent’s Family group, automatically designating it as a Child Account. This feature allows parents to establish suitable limits on content and screen time tailored to their child’s needs.

To further safeguard the privacy of younger users, parents will have the option to provide apps with their child’s age range, such as “12 or Younger.” This new Declared Range API enables applications to automatically present content that aligns with the specified age group. Importantly, Apple emphasizes that this feature does not disclose a child’s exact birthday or age to third-party applications, thereby prioritizing user privacy.

The introduction of these age ranges is a response to increasing pressure on tech companies like Apple and Google to verify the ages of younger users on their platforms. Both companies have expressed concerns regarding the privacy implications of collecting personal information from minors, making these updates a crucial step in addressing these challenges.

Enhanced Communication Limits for Parents

In addition to the improvements in Child Accounts, Apple is expanding its Communication Limits feature. This enhancement allows parents to approve requests from their children when they wish to communicate with new phone numbers through Messages, Phone, FaceTime, and iCloud apps. This functionality will also extend to third-party applications, provided that developers implement the PermissionKit framework.

By enabling parents to manage their children’s communication contacts, Apple aims to create a safer digital environment for younger users. This feature is particularly relevant in today’s digital landscape, where children are increasingly exposed to various forms of communication through multiple platforms.

Age-Appropriate Protections for Older Teens

While the new Child Accounts are specifically designed for users under 13, Apple has announced that it will also enforce similar age-appropriate protections for users under 17, even if they opt for a standard Apple account. This initiative reflects Apple’s commitment to ensuring a safe online experience for all younger users, regardless of their account type.

To complement these protections, Apple is introducing three new age ratings on the App Store: 18+, 16+, and 13+. These ratings will provide developers with the ability to assign more precise age classifications to their applications. Apple anticipates that these new age ratings will be implemented by the end of 2025, further enhancing the App Store’s ability to deliver age-appropriate content to users.
