Introducing Macroscope: AI-Powered Code Analysis and Bug Fixing Tool

The founders of Periscope, a livestreaming video startup sold to Twitter, have launched a new venture called Macroscope, focusing on artificial intelligence. Announced by Kayvon Beykpour, the former head of product at Twitter, Macroscope aims to assist developers and product leaders by summarizing codebase updates and identifying bugs. Co-founded with Joe Bernstein and Rob Bishop, the startup seeks to streamline engineering processes and reduce the time spent in meetings.

Innovative AI Solution for Developers

Macroscope is designed as an “AI-powered understanding engine” that addresses common challenges faced by engineers. The startup was co-founded in July 2023 by Beykpour, Bernstein, and Bishop, all of whom have extensive backgrounds in technology and startups. Beykpour expressed that the product is something he wishes he had during his previous roles, particularly at Twitter, where managing a large team of engineers often became cumbersome. The founders recognized the need for a tool that could simplify the process of tracking code changes and enhance productivity.

Currently, engineers rely on various tools like JIRA, Linear, and spreadsheets to manage their work. Beykpour noted that this often leads to excessive meetings, detracting from actual development time. Macroscope aims to alleviate this issue by providing a more efficient way to monitor code changes and project updates, allowing engineers to focus on building rather than managing.

Seamless Integration with Existing Tools

To utilize Macroscope, customers first install its GitHub app, which grants the platform access to their codebase. Additional integrations with tools like Slack, Linear, and JIRA can also be set up. The software employs a technique known as code walking, which utilizes the Abstract Syntax Tree (AST) to analyze the structure of the code. This analysis is combined with large language models to provide insights and summaries of code changes.

Once implemented, engineers can leverage Macroscope to identify bugs in their pull requests (PRs), receive summaries of their PRs, and ask research-based questions about the code. Product leaders can benefit from real-time updates on product developments, productivity metrics, and answers to inquiries regarding the team’s engineering efforts. This capability allows leaders to better understand team priorities and resource allocation.

Competitive Edge in Code Review

While Macroscope does not have a direct competitor that encompasses all its features, it does compete in the code review sector with tools such as CodeRabbit and Cursor Bugbot. The company claims that its internal benchmarks show Macroscope catching 5% more bugs than the next best tool while generating 75% fewer comments. This efficiency could significantly enhance the code review process, making it a valuable asset for development teams.

The pricing for Macroscope is set at $30 per active developer per month, with a minimum of five seats required. The software is tailored for use with GitHub Cloud and offers enterprise pricing options for larger organizations. Several startups and established companies, including XMTP and A24 Labs, have already begun using the product ahead of its official launch.

Funding and Future Prospects

Macroscope, based in San Francisco, has successfully raised $30 million in Series A funding, led by Michael Mignano at Lightspeed. Other notable investors include Adverb, Thrive Capital, and Google Ventures, bringing the total funding to $40 million. With a team of 20, the startup is poised for growth as it seeks to revolutionize the way developers interact with their codebases and enhance productivity in software development. As the demand for AI-driven solutions continues to rise, Macroscope aims to position itself as a leader in this evolving landscape.
