Intracity Hydrogen Buses to start Operation in Leh on Trial Basis

To achieve zero-emission Ladakh, NTPC is setting up a hydrogen fueling station, a solar power plant and supplying five fuel cell buses for operation on Leh’s intra-city routes.

The first hydrogen bus reached Leh on the 17thth August 2023 as part of a 3 month process of field trials, engineering checks and other legal procedures. This will be India’s first deployment of hydrogen buses on public roads.

The first-of-its-kind green hydrogen mobility project at 11,562 feet is sited alongside a dedicated 1.7 MW solar array to provide renewable energy. A unique feature of this design is that the fuel cell buses are designed to operate in sub-zero temperatures in the thin atmosphere typical of high-altitude locations.

NTPC is committed to achieving 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032 and to be a major player in green hydrogen technology and energy storage. The company is undertaking several initiatives towards decarbonization such as hydrogen blending, carbon capture, EV buses and Smart NTPC Townships.
