International Day for Biological Diversity

International Day for Biological Diversity

To increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues, the United Nations has proclaimed May 22 as The International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB). In late 1993, the UN General Assembly’s Second Committee designated 29 December (the date of entry into force of the Convention on Biological Diversity) as The International Day for Biological Diversity.

Whether it’s ecosystem-based approaches to climate change and/or nature-based solutions to climate change, food and water security issues, sustainable livelihoods, and the issue of health, biodiversity is the foundation upon which we can build back better. As such, it is the most important message of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), which is a key international instrument for sustainable development.

History of International Day for Biological Diversity

In December 2000, the United Nations General Assembly established the day to raise awareness about the importance of biodiversity.

Biodiversity refers to the variety of life on Earth, including plants, animals, and microorganisms. The diversity of life provides humans with food, water, fuel, and medicine, as well as helping to maintain the balance of nature. Human activities such as deforestation, overfishing, pollution, and climate change threaten biodiversity. As a result of these activities, fewer species of plants and animals exist on Earth.
