International Big Cat Alliance Officially Established
In a significant advancement for wildlife conservation, the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) has officially come into force. This treaty-based inter-governmental organization will begin its operations on January 23, 2025. The announcement was made by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India, which serves as the Depository of the Framework Agreement. Five countries have already ratified the agreement, marking a crucial step toward global collaboration in the conservation of big cats.
Ratification and Membership
The MEA confirmed that five nations have deposited their instruments of ratification, acceptance, or approval under Article VIII (1) of the Framework Agreement. These countries are the Republic of Nicaragua, the Kingdom of Eswatini, the Republic of India, the Federal Republic of Somalia, and the Republic of Liberia. Their participation is vital for the establishment of the IBCA as a fully recognized international legal entity.
As of now, a total of 27 countries, including India, have expressed their intent to join the IBCA. This growing membership reflects a global commitment to the conservation of big cats. Additionally, several international and national organizations focused on wildlife conservation have partnered with the IBCA. The primary objective of the IBCA is to conserve seven species of big cats: the Tiger, Lion, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Cheetah, Jaguar, and Puma.
