Instagram Co-Founder Reveals Mark Zuckerberg Acknowledged App’s Expansion

Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom provided compelling testimony during Meta’s antitrust trial, asserting that the photo-sharing app could have thrived independently without its acquisition by Meta Platforms Inc. Systrom claimed that CEO Mark Zuckerberg eventually perceived Instagram’s rapid growth as a threat, leading to a lack of necessary resources for its development. His statements could significantly impact the U.S. government’s ongoing case against Meta, which seeks to reverse the 2012 acquisition of Instagram, a platform now boasting nearly three billion users worldwide.

Instagram’s Growth Before Acquisition

During his testimony, Systrom highlighted Instagram’s impressive growth trajectory prior to its acquisition by Meta. He recalled that user registrations surged 13-fold in 2011, the year before the deal was finalized. Systrom emphasized that Instagram was on a path to success, capable of introducing key features such as video support and private messaging without Meta’s assistance. He noted that the startup effectively utilized Amazon Web Services for its operational needs and could have independently tackled issues like spam and harmful content. โ€œWe would have been able to scale our problematic content screening fairly well,โ€ he stated, asserting that the challenges were manageable. However, he also acknowledged that while the likelihood of failure was low, it was still a possibility.

Resource Allocation and Support Issues

Systrom’s testimony revealed his frustrations regarding the lack of resources allocated to Instagram following its acquisition. He described Zuckerberg’s fluctuating support for the app, suggesting that the CEO began to view Instagram as a competitive threat to Facebook. Despite his requests for additional resources, including personnel for initiatives related to video and data privacy, Systrom claimed that Instagram often received inadequate support. He pointed out that even after the Cambridge Analytica scandal, which raised significant concerns about data privacy, Instagram did not gain any new employees to bolster its efforts. โ€œI thought that that was not appropriate given the scale of Instagram,โ€ he remarked, expressing disappointment over the disparity between his efforts and the resources provided.

FTC’s Case Against Meta

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is building a case to demonstrate that Meta’s acquisition of Instagram, along with WhatsApp in 2014, created an illegal monopoly in the social networking space. The agency aims to convince U.S. District Judge James Boasberg to annul these acquisitions. Systrom’s testimony supports the FTC’s argument that Instagram was a rising competitor that could have posed a significant challenge to Meta had it remained independent. The trial has also revealed internal communications from Zuckerberg and other executives expressing concern over Instagram’s rapid growth and superior features. The FTC contends that Meta’s acquisition harmed users by increasing advertising and compromising safety and security.

Meta’s Defense and Instagram’s Evolution

In response to the FTC’s claims, Meta argues that the company played a crucial role in Instagram’s success post-acquisition. Meta’s legal team highlighted the extensive support provided to Instagram, including hiring employees, enhancing the app’s advertising capabilities, and promoting it through Facebook. When Instagram was acquired, it had approximately 30 million users and limited infrastructure. Meta General Counsel Jennifer Newstead noted that many of Instagram’s current features were developed using Meta’s technology after the acquisition. Systrom acknowledged that Facebook had initially helped drive user growth for Instagram, but he also indicated that Zuckerberg’s decision to limit support for Instagram in 2018 was based on the belief that it was hindering Facebook’s growth. This shift in strategy, according to Systrom, could have significantly impacted Instagram’s user growth potential.
