Insights from Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics 2024
On National Milk Day, Union Minister Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh, also known as Lalan Singh, unveiled the annual publication titled โBasic Animal Husbandry Statistics 2024โ in New Delhi. This significant event was attended by various dignitaries, including Ministers of State Prof. S P Singh Baghel and Shri George Kurian, along with Ms. Alka Upadhyay, Secretary of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying. The publication serves as a crucial resource for understanding trends in the livestock and dairy sectors in India.
Importance of the Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics
The โBasic Animal Husbandry Statistics (BAHS) 2024โ is a vital document that provides essential insights into the livestock and dairy sectors. It is based on the Integrated Sample Survey (ISS) conducted between March 1, 2023, and February 29, 2024. This unique survey generates critical data on Major Livestock Products (MLPs) such as milk, eggs, meat, and wool. The findings play a pivotal role in shaping policies within the livestock sector.
The publication includes state-wise production estimates and per-capita availability of MLPs. It also offers insights into the estimated number of animals involved in milk production, poultry egg-laying birds, animals slaughtered, and sheep shorn. Furthermore, it presents valuable data on veterinary hospitals, polyclinics, gaushalas, state farms, and other infrastructure details. The report also highlights the number of artificial inseminations performed and provides a global perspective on the livestock sector, making it an indispensable tool for policymakers and stakeholders alike.
Key Findings on Milk Production

This figure marks a significant growth of 5.62% over the past decade, compared to 146.3 million tonnes in 2014-15. Additionally, there has been a 3.78% increase in production compared to the previous year.
Uttar Pradesh leads the nation in milk production, contributing 16.21% of the total. It is followed by Rajasthan (14.51%), Madhya Pradesh (8.91%), Gujarat (7.65%), and Maharashtra (6.71%). Notably, West Bengal recorded the highest annual growth rate (AGR) at 9.76%, followed by Jharkhand (9.04%) and Chhattisgarh (8.62%). These statistics underscore the importance of milk production in Indiaโs agricultural landscape and highlight the states that are driving growth in this sector.
Egg, Meat, and Wool Production Insights

In terms of meat production, the total estimate stands at 10.25 million tonnes for 2023-24, showing a growth of 4.85% over the last decade. West Bengal leads in meat production with a 12.62% share, followed closely by Uttar Pradesh (12.29%) and Maharashtra (11.28%). The highest AGR for meat production was recorded in Assam at 17.93%.
Wool production, on the other hand, is estimated at 33.69 million kg for 2023-24, showing a slight growth of 0.22% from the previous year. Rajasthan remains the top contributor, accounting for 47.53% of the total wool production. These insights into egg, meat, and wool production highlight the diverse contributions of various states to India’s agricultural output.
Global Standing of India in Livestock Production
India holds a prominent position in the global livestock sector. It is the leading country in milk production and ranks second in egg production worldwide. This achievement reflects the countryโs robust agricultural practices and the dedication of its farmers. The data presented in the BAHS 2024 not only showcases the growth in production but also emphasizes the importance of sustainable practices in the livestock sector.
