INS Teg Completes Port Visit During Operational Deployment to South West Indian Ocean Region

INS Teg, a stealth frigate of the Indian Navy, recently wrapped up a significant port call at Port Louis, Mauritius, on June 22, 2025. This visit was part of the ship’s operational deployment to the South West Indian Ocean Region and included a variety of professional, social, and cultural activities. The engagement highlighted the strong maritime partnership between India and Mauritius, emphasizing their commitment to regional security and cooperation.

Joint Surveillance Operations

During its deployment, INS Teg collaborated with the Mauritius National Coast Guard (NCG) to conduct coordinated surveillance of the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). This joint operation aimed to enhance maritime security and combat Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing in the region. The partnership between the Indian Navy and the NCG reflects both nations’ dedication to protecting shared maritime interests and ensuring the sustainability of marine resources. By working together, the two forces reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding the global commons, showcasing their ability to address maritime challenges effectively.

High-Level Interactions

Captain Vikas Guleria, the Commanding Officer of INS Teg, engaged with several senior officials during the visit. Meetings included discussions with Mr. Rampersad Sooroojebally, the Commissioner of Police, and Mr. Suresh Seebaluck, the Secretary to Cabinet, among others. These interactions were pivotal in fostering mutual understanding and strengthening the bilateral relationship between India and Mauritius. The presence of high-ranking officials from both nations underscored the importance of this visit in enhancing diplomatic ties and operational cooperation in maritime security.

Capacity Building and Training Initiatives

As part of its mission, INS Teg also focused on capacity-building initiatives by providing training to NCG personnel. The training covered various critical areas, including firefighting, damage control, and watchkeeping in the bridge and engine room. Additionally, the crew conducted live demonstrations, such as post-sailing diving checks, to enhance practical skills. A technical team from INS Teg assisted the NCG in resolving a defect on the CGS Valiant, successfully operationalizing a diesel generator. This support was well-received and highlighted the collaborative spirit of the two maritime forces.

Cultural Engagements and Community Activities

In celebration of the International Day of Yoga on June 21, a joint yoga session was organized, attracting around 150 participants, including dignitaries and personnel from both the Indian Navy and the NCG. This event not only promoted wellness but also fostered camaraderie among participants. Additional recreational activities, such as a trek to Signal Mountain and a friendly volleyball match, were arranged to strengthen cross-cultural bonds. The visit of INS Teg to Mauritius exemplified the Indian Navy’s commitment to enhancing maritime security cooperation and reinforcing the enduring friendship between India and Mauritius, built on shared values and a common vision for a secure Indian Ocean Region.
