Innovative Water Conservation Initiative Boosts Agriculture in Dhakori Village
The Adani Foundation, in collaboration with ACC, has made significant strides in enhancing water security for the residents of Dhakori village in Yavatmal, Maharashtra. By implementing a robust water conservation program, they aim to tackle the region’s recurring water scarcity challenges and transform local agricultural practices.
Addressing Long-Standing Water Scarcity
Despite being blessed with heavy monsoon rains, Dhakori faced a persistent issue with water management. Most of the rainwater would flow downstream, leading to dry fields by November and leaving farmers with no option but to cultivate a single crop each year. To combat this, ACC and the Adani Foundation launched the Climate Action Water Conservation initiative, which includes the construction of a cement nala bund designed to retain water. This structure now retains approximately 48,000 liters of water, recharges local borewells, and ensures a reliable water supply throughout the year.
Transforming Livelihoods Through Sustainable Practices
This innovative initiative benefits approximately 35 farmers across 96 acres of agricultural land. With improved access to water, these farmers can now diversify their crops and increase their income. Reports indicate an income surge of around ₹18,000 per acre, allowing families to stabilize their financial situations. Additionally, the new water resources have enhanced both household and livestock water security, promoting overall community resilience.
