Innovative Solutions Emerge from HIMASHIELD 2024 Challenge

The HIMASHIELD 2024 Grand Challenge, organized by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) in Thiruvananthapuram, concluded successfully on National Science Day. This initiative, backed by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, aimed to inspire young innovators to devise sustainable solutions for mitigating Glacier Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs). The challenge attracted a diverse range of participants, culminating in a competitive final round that showcased groundbreaking ideas.

Challenge Overview and Participation

Launched on August 24, 2024, by Shri S. Krishnan, IAS, Secretary of MeitY, the HIMASHIELD 2024 Grand Challenge aimed to address the pressing issue of GLOFs, which are increasingly threatening communities due to climate change. The challenge saw an impressive turnout, with 151 teams entering the initial round. After rigorous evaluations, 30 teams advanced to the subsequent round, and ultimately, seven teams competed in the final stage. This competitive environment fostered creativity and collaboration among young researchers and innovators, all striving to develop effective solutions to a critical environmental challenge.

Winners of the Grand Challenge

The competition concluded with the announcement of the winners, who were recognized for their innovative approaches to GLOF mitigation. The top prize of Rs 5 lakhs, along with a trophy and certificates, was awarded to the Glofsense Team, comprising Venkatesh R, Naveen Krishnaa S, and Nithish T from Bannari Amman Institute of Technology in Tamil Nadu. The first runners-up, the CryoWizards Team, received Rs 3 lakhs, a trophy, and certificates. This team included Sourabh Anand from the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology and members from the Birla Institute of Technology. The second runners-up, the CryoSense Team, which included researchers from IIT Bhubaneswar, was awarded Rs 2 lakhs, a trophy, and certificates. These teams exemplified the innovative spirit and commitment to addressing climate-related challenges.

Award Ceremony Highlights

The award ceremony was presided over by Ms. Sunita Verma, Scientist G and Group Coordinator of R&D at MeitY. Other notable attendees included Dr. Kalai Selvan A, Director of C-DAC Thiruvananthapuram, and Shri Arvind Kumar, CCA of MeitY. To commemorate National Science Day, the event featured technical talks aimed at raising community awareness. Esteemed speakers included Dr. D. D. Ray, a former Outstanding Scientist from the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, and Shri D. G. Shreshta, Secretary of the Department of Science & Technology in Sikkim.
