Infosys Enforces New Office Attendance Mandate

Infosys, India’s second-largest software services firm, has announced a new policy requiring its technology staff to work from the office for at least 10 days each month. This directive, aimed at boosting on-campus attendance, will be implemented through a mobile application that restricts work-from-home requests. The move comes as the company seeks to enhance collaboration and address project needs.
New Attendance System Introduced
On Wednesday, Infosys unveiled a mobile application designed to enforce its new attendance policy. Employees will now be required to be physically present at their designated office locations for a minimum of 10 days each month. According to a senior staff member who preferred to remain anonymous, the application will not automatically approve work-from-home requests. This change is primarily driven by project requirements rather than departmental needs. Department heads have begun notifying their teams via email about the new restrictions on work-from-home requests, effective March 10, 2025. The email stated, “To support this, starting March 10, 2025, system interventions will be implemented to limit the number of work-from-home days that can be applied each month.” This initiative aims to ensure compliance with the hybrid work model while still allowing some flexibility for employees.
Impact on Employees and Job Levels
The new policy specifically targets employees at job level 5 (JL5) and below, which includes team leaders, software engineers, senior engineers, system engineers, and consultants. However, those in JL6 and above, such as managers and senior managers, are not subject to this mandate. A senior executive explained that the systematic approach is intended to foster better team collaboration while maintaining workplace flexibility. Some employees have expressed concerns about the potential negative impact of this policy. One staff member noted that remote work had previously reduced travel time and physical strain, suggesting that the new requirements might affect productivity for certain individuals. Internal sources indicate that failing to meet the office attendance requirement by one or two days could lead to deductions from the employee’s leave allocation.
Comparison with Competitors
In contrast to Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), a primary competitor, has tied employees’ variable compensation to adherence to a five-day office attendance policy. This shift towards increased office-based work follows a trend initiated during the pandemic when many tech firms adopted remote working arrangements. Factors such as economic slowdown, concerns over employee moonlighting, and the desire to strengthen workplace culture have prompted Infosys and other tech companies to implement stricter office attendance policies. Infosys launched its return-to-office initiative on November 20, 2023, designating specific weeks each quarter as “in-person collaboration” weeks, requiring complete team presence for collaborative activities. Meanwhile, Wipro, another Bengaluru-based competitor, maintains a hybrid work model, requiring staff to work from the office three times a week, along with an allowance of 30 days for remote work annually.
