Industry Encouraged to Promote Gender and Caste Diversity for Inclusion

The Vice-President of India, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar, emphasized the critical role of the private sector in fostering inclusion and sustainable development during his address at the 19th Edition of the CII-ITC Sustainability Awards in New Delhi. He urged industry leaders to support micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and to promote gender and caste diversity in leadership roles. Dhankhar highlighted the need for a collective effort to ensure that opportunities are accessible to all, rather than being privileges for a select few.

Industry’s Role in Sustainable Development

During his speech, Vice-President Dhankhar called on the private sector to embrace its responsibility as a co-architect of India’s future. He stated that businesses should not only focus on economic gains but also contribute positively to society. He remarked, “We are not mercenaries; we don’t stand for exploitation.” Dhankhar underscored that a truly developed nation is one where opportunities are available to everyone, not just a privileged few. He urged industry leaders to view sustainability not merely as a compliance requirement but as a competitive advantage that can drive innovation and growth.

Embracing Diversity and Inclusion

Dhankhar stressed the importance of gender and caste diversity in leadership roles within industries. He acknowledged that while affirmative action is championed, subtle forms of gender discrimination often persist. He called for a deeper appreciation of diversity, urging industry leaders to actively support initiatives that promote inclusivity. The Vice-President’s remarks highlighted the need for a cultural shift within organizations to ensure that all voices are heard and valued, thereby fostering a more equitable business environment.

Collaboration Between Government and Industry

The Vice-President pointed out that the government’s role is primarily that of an enabler, with significant responsibilities resting on the corporate sector. He noted that the government has implemented various initiatives, such as the National Single Window System for clearances and the Gati Shakti Infrastructure plan, to facilitate business operations. However, he emphasized that the private sector must take the lead in driving innovation and creating job opportunities. Dhankhar expressed confidence in the potential of Indian industry to collaborate effectively with the government to achieve substantial progress.

Investing in the Future

In his address, Dhankhar highlighted the importance of investing in research and development, particularly in indigenous design. He called for a concerted effort from the industry to focus on creating meaningful change through research that goes beyond surface-level understanding. Additionally, he addressed the demographic dividend of India’s youth, urging businesses to channel this potential effectively. He stressed the need for collaboration between industry, academia, and training institutes to develop curricula that prepare young people for future challenges. By harnessing the skills of the youth, Dhankhar believes that India can secure its position as a reliable partner in the global economy.
