IndiGo’s Bold Move into Business Class

IndiGo, India’s largest airline, is set to shake up the aviation market with its plans to introduce business class seating. This move challenges Air India’s long-standing dominance in the premium travel segment. Traditionally, IndiGo has focused on providing cost-effective travel options with an all-economy cabin configuration. However, the airline’s new strategy aims to cater to the growing demand for premium travel among business passengers. Industry analysts believe that this competition will ultimately benefit travelers, as both IndiGo and Air India expand their premium seating offerings.

IndiGoโ€™s Premium Class Plans

IndiGo’s transition to include business class seating will begin in mid-2024. The airline plans to implement premium seating on 20 daily flights between Delhi and Mumbai. Additionally, all 15 daily flights on the Delhi-Bengaluru route will also feature business class seats. This strategic move targets two of the busiest domestic routes in India, which are vital for corporate travel.

The airline intends to add over 150 premium seats on the Delhi-Mumbai route, known for being one of the world’s most frequented corporate travel corridors. IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers has stated that by the end of 2025, the airline will have 45 aircraft equipped with the new business class cabin. This significant upgrade reflects IndiGo’s commitment to enhancing its service offerings and attracting more business travelers.

The introduction of business class seating is expected to disrupt the pricing structure for premium travel. According to aviation consultancy firm CAPA, the increase in premium seating capacity on domestic and select international routes will likely lead to competitive pricing for business class and premium economy tickets. This shift could make premium travel more accessible to a broader range of passengers.

IndiGo vs Air India

IndiGo and Air India are adopting different strategies for their business class services. While IndiGo will not offer complimentary lounge access or hot meals for its business class travelers, Air India continues to provide these amenities. IndiGo’s research indicates that business passengers on short domestic flights prioritize frequent flight options, comfortable seating, and reduced waiting times at airports.

IndiGo’s premium seating will be priced between Rs 18,000 and Rs 20,000. This pricing aligns with Air India’s premium economy rates but is significantly lower than traditional business class fares. This competitive pricing strategy may attract more business travelers who are looking for value without compromising on comfort.

Air India, on the other hand, is working to maintain its competitive edge by utilizing Vistara aircraft and newly acquired planes on key metropolitan routes. The Tata-owned airline aims to safeguard its position in the premium market by offering enhanced comfort and superior service compared to its older fleet. Air India’s Chief Executive, Campbell Wilson, has emphasized the airline’s commitment to dominating metropolitan routes with a 55% seat capacity following the merger with Vistara.

Air India’s Strategy for Retaining Premium Clients

In response to the competitive landscape, Air India is actively upgrading its fleet. The airline has initiated a $400 million renovation project to enhance 67 older aircraft, including 27 narrow-body Airbus A320neo planes by mid-2025. This renovation aims to elevate Air India’s service quality and align it with global standards.

Air India’s current fleet primarily consists of older aircraft, with the exception of 25 Airbus A320 family aircraft leased during 2022-2023. The airline plans to receive new aircraft starting in 2026, supplementing its recent order of 470 aircraft with an additional 100 planes. This expansion will bolster Air India’s capacity to serve premium travelers effectively.

Wilson has stated that post-Vistara merger, Air India will focus on providing the best product available in its fleet. The airline’s strategy includes refurbishing its aircraft to ensure a uniform standard across its fleet. As the competition heats up between IndiGo and Air India, passengers can expect enhanced services and competitive pricing in the premium travel segment.
