IndiGo Expands Fleet with New Boeing 787-9 Aircraft

Mumbai-based IndiGo Airlines has announced the addition of three Boeing 787-9 aircraft to its fleet through a damp lease agreement with Norse Atlantic Airways. This move is part of IndiGo’s strategy to enhance its international operations, particularly targeting European routes starting mid-summer 2025. The airline currently operates two Boeing 777 planes on its Istanbul routes and is set to introduce its first Boeing 787 on the Delhi-Bangkok route by March 2025.
New Aircraft to Enhance International Reach
IndiGo’s recent agreement with Norse Atlantic Airways marks a significant step in the airline’s expansion plans. The three Boeing 787-9 aircraft are expected to arrive in India during the latter half of 2025. These planes will be utilized for long-haul flights, further solidifying IndiGo’s presence in the international market. The damp lease arrangement means that while Norse Atlantic will provide the aircraft and maintenance, IndiGo will manage the crew and insurance.
The damp lease is initially set for six months but can be extended up to 18 months, pending regulatory approvals. IndiGo’s commitment to exploring additional aircraft leasing options with Norse Atlantic highlights its ambition to broaden its operational capabilities and enhance customer travel options.
Strategic Vision for Global Expansion
Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo, emphasized the airline’s strategic vision to become a global player by 2030. He stated that the addition of these aircraft is a crucial part of their broader strategy to strengthen their international network. The airline aims to cater to the increasing demand for international travel to and from India, and this partnership with Norse Atlantic is a significant milestone in that journey.
IndiGo’s current fleet includes 355 aircraft, and with the addition of the new Boeing 787s, the airline will have a total of six widebody planes, comprising four B787s and two B777s. This expansion is expected to enhance IndiGo’s operational flexibility and service offerings, particularly on long-haul routes.
Future Plans and Orders
In addition to the damp lease of the Boeing 787-9 aircraft, IndiGo has placed a firm order for 30 Airbus A350-900 aircraft, with an option for an additional 70. Deliveries for these new aircraft are anticipated to begin in 2027. This strategic move underscores IndiGo’s commitment to expanding its fleet and enhancing its service capabilities in the competitive aviation market.
As IndiGo continues to grow its international footprint, the airline remains focused on providing a wider range of travel opportunities for its customers. The collaboration with Norse Atlantic Airways is just one of the many steps IndiGo is taking to establish itself as a key player in the global aviation landscape.
