IndiGo and BIAL Collaborate on MoU for 31-Acre MRO Hub at Kempegowda International Airport

IndiGo has taken a significant step in expanding its operations by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bangalore International Airport Ltd. (BIAL) to establish a dedicated Maintenance, Repair, and Operations (MRO) facility at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru. This partnership will see BIAL allocate around 31 acres of land for the development of the MRO infrastructure, which is crucial for supporting IndiGo’s growing fleet. The collaboration aims to enhance the aviation ecosystem in Bengaluru, positioning the city as a premier international hub.
Strategic Partnership for Growth
The agreement between IndiGo and BIAL marks a pivotal moment for both entities. Pieter Elbers, the Chief Executive Officer of IndiGo, emphasized the importance of this partnership in fostering long-term growth within the aviation sector in Bengaluru. He stated that the collaboration is a significant step towards establishing a robust global presence for IndiGo and enhancing India’s position in the international aviation market. This initiative not only aims to improve operational efficiency but also to solidify Bengaluru’s status as a world-class aviation hub.
Hari Marar, Managing Director and CEO of BIAL, echoed Elbers’ sentiments, highlighting the successful long-term relationship between the two organizations. He noted that this collaboration is a testament to the growth potential of Kempegowda International Airport and the city itself. Marar expressed confidence that the new MRO facility will contribute to developing top-tier aviation infrastructure, further establishing Bengaluru as a leading aerospace and MRO center in India.
Expansion Plans and Fleet Growth
In addition to the MRO facility, IndiGo and BIAL are set to explore further collaboration in various areas, including network expansion and infrastructure development. IndiGo is preparing for rapid fleet growth, with plans to operate over 600 aircraft by 2030. This ambitious expansion includes a recent partnership with Norse Atlantic Airways for the dry lease of six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, with deliveries expected to be completed by early 2026. This fleet enhancement is part of IndiGo’s strategy to introduce long-haul operations, including non-stop flights from Mumbai to Manchester and Amsterdam starting in July 2025.
As part of its growth strategy, IndiGo is also looking to expand its long-haul network to include destinations like London and Copenhagen. Domestically, the airline plans to add four new destinations, increasing its network from 91 to 95 locations. Furthermore, IndiGo is poised to become the first airline to operate from the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport and Noida International Airport in Jewar, showcasing its commitment to expanding its footprint in the Indian aviation market.
Innovations and Customer Engagement
IndiGo’s recent initiatives also include the launch of its loyalty program, BlueChip, which has already attracted three million members within just six months of its introduction. Elbers highlighted that the financial year 2025 has been a transformative period for IndiGo, marking significant advancements in its evolution into a global airline. The airline has introduced IndiGoStretch, a tailored business offering, alongside its loyalty program, as part of its broader strategy to enhance customer engagement and satisfaction.
The airline’s commitment to innovation and customer service is evident in its efforts to expand both domestic and international networks. With these developments, IndiGo aims to solidify its position as a leader in the aviation industry, focusing on providing exceptional service and expanding its reach to meet the growing demands of travelers. As the airline continues to grow, it remains dedicated to enhancing the overall travel experience for its customers while contributing to the development of India’s aviation infrastructure.
