India’s Urban Water Transport Initiative
The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) is embarking on an ambitious project to enhance urban transport systems across the country. In its 196th Board Meeting, the IWAI Board approved a feasibility study for developing an Urban Water Transport System in various cities. This initiative aims to explore the potential of a Water Metro in 17 cities across 12 states. Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has been tasked with conducting this feasibility study. The project promises to revolutionize urban transportation by utilizing India’s extensive network of navigable waterways.
Transforming Urban Transport with Water Metro
The proposed Urban Water Transport System represents a significant advancement in urban mobility. By leveraging existing waterways, the Water Metro model offers a safe, efficient, and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional transport methods. This initiative aims to reduce traffic congestion and pollution in urban areas, making cities more livable.
The IWAI has identified 17 cities with considerable potential for this water transport system. These cities include Ayodhya, Dhubri, Goa, Guwahati, and Kolkata, among others. Each location has unique waterways that can be transformed into effective transport routes. The project will not only enhance connectivity but also promote tourism and regional economic growth. Government Support and Green Initiatives
The Urban Water Transport System is backed by strong government support. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, the IWAI is making significant strides in developing India’s waterways. The authority is expanding its reach from Arunachal Pradesh in the East to Gujarat in the West, and from Jammu and Kashmir in the North to Kerala in the South.
In line with the Harit Nauka guidelines, the IWAI has implemented several green initiatives. These include the procurement of electric catamarans for passenger ferries. Currently, two catamarans are operational in Varanasi and Ayodhya, with plans to deploy six more in Mathura and Guwahati. Additionally, a hydrogen fuel cell-powered vessel has successfully completed trials, showcasing the IWAI’s commitment to innovative and sustainable transport solutions.
The development of the Urban Water Transport System will build on these proactive measures. By investing in modern, eco-friendly vessels and infrastructure, the IWAI aims to create a robust urban transport network that meets the needs of India’s growing population while protecting the environment.
