India’s Services Sector Growth Slows in February Amid Softening Demand and Rising Costs
India’s services sector experienced a slight slowdown in growth during February, as new business expansion reached a 13-month low. This decline is attributed to softer demand conditions and rising inflation, according to a recent monthly survey. The HSBC India Services PMI Business Activity Index fell to 58.1 in February, down from 58.5 in January. Despite this dip, the index remains above the neutral mark of 50, indicating continued expansion in the sector.
Services Sector Performance
The HSBC India Services PMI report highlights that the services sector continues to show resilience, even as growth has moderated. The index’s reading of 58.1 suggests robust expansion, although it reflects a slight decrease from January’s figures. Pranjul Bhandari, Chief India Economist at HSBC, noted that while new order growth has slowed due to increased competition, there has been a notable rise in international sales. This uptick in foreign demand has prompted service providers to enhance their hiring efforts to meet operational needs.
Respondents to the survey indicated that some firms benefited from stronger client inquiries and targeted marketing strategies, which bolstered sales. However, the competitive landscape has posed challenges, limiting the pace of growth for certain businesses. Overall, the services sector remains dynamic, with companies adapting to changing market conditions.
International Demand and Hiring Trends
February saw a significant increase in international sales for Indian service providers, marking the fastest growth since last August. Companies reported improved business from various overseas markets, including Canada, Germany, mainland China, Singapore, the UAE, the UK, and the US. This surge in external demand has been a crucial factor in sustaining growth within the sector.
In response to rising demand, service providers have ramped up hiring, with employment levels reaching their highest since October. This trend reflects a positive outlook among businesses as they seek to expand their market presence. The combination of increased international sales and heightened hiring activity underscores the sector’s adaptability in a competitive environment.
Cost Pressures and Inflationary Trends
Despite the positive developments in the services sector, cost pressures have intensified. Operating expenses rose at the sharpest rate in two and a half years, leading firms to increase their selling prices at the fastest pace in six months. Bhandari pointed out that both input and output price inflation accelerated, with companies passing on higher costs—particularly for food and labor—to customers.
These inflationary trends are not limited to the services sector; they are also evident in the broader private sector. The composite PMI, which combines manufacturing and services indicators, rose to 58.9 in February, reflecting the fastest pace of private sector activity growth in three months. This increase is supported by improved demand and higher new business inflows across both sectors.
Outlook for the Private Sector
The overall outlook for the private sector remains optimistic, with business confidence climbing to its highest level in a year. The composite PMI figures indicate that while the pace of new order growth has stabilized, hiring activity has strengthened significantly. Inflationary pressures are expected to persist, with both input costs and output charges rising at quicker rates, reaching nine-month and six-month highs, respectively.
As the services sector navigates these challenges, the resilience demonstrated in February suggests that businesses are well-positioned to adapt and thrive in a competitive landscape. The combination of robust international demand and proactive hiring strategies bodes well for the future of India’s services sector.
