India’s Resolution on Promoting Sustainable Lifestyles for Wetlands Adopted at Ramsar CoP15 in Zimbabwe

At the 15th Ramsar Conference of Parties held in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, India successfully introduced a significant resolution aimed at promoting sustainable lifestyles for the wise use of wetlands. This resolution, which garnered overwhelming support from 172 Ramsar Contracting Parties and various international organizations, was officially adopted during the plenary session on July 30, 2025. Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Bhupender Yadav, announced the resolution’s adoption via social media, highlighting its alignment with India’s broader environmental initiatives.
Resolution Highlights and Global Support
The resolution on โPromoting Sustainable Lifestyles for the Wise Use of Wetlandsโ received enthusiastic backing from a diverse group of stakeholders, including 172 Ramsar Contracting Parties and six international organization partners. This collective endorsement underscores the global recognition of the importance of individual and societal choices in wetlands conservation. The resolution was formally adopted during a plenary session, marking a pivotal moment in international efforts to address environmental challenges. By endorsing this resolution, participating nations have committed to fostering a pro-planet lifestyle tailored to their unique national contexts. This approach emphasizes the necessity of a comprehensive societal effort to tackle wetlands conservation effectively.
Encouraging Sustainable Practices
The resolution encourages countries to integrate sustainable lifestyle interventions into their wetland management plans and programs. It calls for voluntary actions that create enabling conditions for collaboration between public and private sectors. The resolution also emphasizes the importance of education and awareness-raising initiatives to enhance the wise use of wetlands. During a high-level segment on July 24, 2025, Minister Yadav highlighted the critical role of sustainable lifestyles in fostering environmentally friendly behaviors. He urged nations to support the resolution, reinforcing the idea that collective action is essential for effective wetlands conservation.
Defining Sustainable Lifestyles
Sustainable lifestyles are characterized by choices and behaviors that minimize environmental degradation, promote equitable socio-economic development, and enhance overall quality of life. These lifestyles encourage individuals to conserve resources, reduce waste, and make environmentally conscious decisions. The resolution aligns with previous initiatives, including Resolution XIV.8, which focuses on sustainable production and consumption. It aims to empower citizens to make informed choices that contribute to the health of wetlands and the environment at large.
India’s Commitment to Wetlands Conservation
India has taken proactive steps to embed the principles of Mission LiFE into its national wetlands conservation efforts. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the UNFCCC CoP 26, Mission LiFE aims to mobilize individual and community actions for environmental protection. The โMission Sahbhagitaโ and โSave Wetlandsโ campaigns have engaged over 2 million volunteers, resulting in the mapping of more than 170,000 wetlands and the demarcation of boundaries for nearly 120,000 wetlands over the past three years. These initiatives reflect India’s commitment to fostering a culture of sustainability and environmental stewardship among its citizens.
