India’s Renewable Energy Strategy Focuses on Wind Energy

On Global Wind Day 2025, Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Shri Pralhad Joshi, emphasized the pivotal role of wind energy in India’s renewable energy strategy during a conference in Bengaluru. He was joined by Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy, Shri Shripad Yesso Naik, and Karnataka’s Energy Minister, Shri K.G. George. Minister Joshi outlined ambitious national goals, including achieving 50% of power capacity from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030 and reaching net-zero emissions by 2070, highlighting wind energy as a cornerstone of these objectives.

India’s Renewable Energy Vision

Minister Joshi articulated the vision set forth by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which aims to integrate renewable energy into manufacturing while ensuring conventional energy meets household needs. He stressed that as Indiaโ€™s manufacturing capacity grows, the demand for energy will increase, necessitating a robust renewable energy infrastructure. The minister noted that India currently ranks fourth globally in installed wind power capacity and is the third-largest producer of renewable energy. He expressed pride in the rapid progress made over the past decade, stating that few anticipated India would reach this level of renewable energy manufacturing so quickly.

Challenges and Strategic Priorities

During his address, Minister Joshi identified three critical challenges facing the wind energy sector. First, he called for the integration of wind energy with solar power and battery energy storage systems to ensure consistent power supply and grid stability. Second, he highlighted the need for competitive tariffs, stating that the current rate of โ‚น3.90 per unit is too high and must be reduced. Lastly, he emphasized the importance of enhancing domestic manufacturing efficiency to not only meet national targets but also to boost exports.

To support these initiatives, the government has significantly increased the renewable energy budget by 53%, allocating โ‚น26,549 crore, with a substantial portion directed towards wind energy. The minister urged states to take the lead in this transition, addressing issues such as land availability and transmission delays to ensure timely execution of projects.

Unlocking Wind Potential

Minister Joshi outlined a coordinated national approach to fully harness India’s wind energy potential, focusing on five key priorities. These include expanding wind energy projects into new states like Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, and Odisha; launching the offshore wind sector with identified leasing areas in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu; integrating wind energy into comprehensive green power strategies; modernizing the grid with advanced forecasting technologies; and enhancing local manufacturing across the wind energy value chain.

At the event, the minister also released the Wind Energy Roadmap and Manufacturing Roadmap, which are intended to guide the future of India’s wind energy sector. He recognized the top-performing states in wind capacity addition, with Karnataka leading at 1,331.48 MW, followed by Tamil Nadu and Gujarat.

Global Wind Day and Its Significance

Global Wind Day, celebrated on June 15, serves to highlight the advancements in wind energy and the government’s ongoing support for the sector. The event, organized by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, brought together key stakeholders from various sectors, including government authorities, the wind industry, and academia, to discuss the progress and future of wind energy development in India. The event also received support from organizations such as the Wind Independent Power Producers Associations and the Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association.
