India’s Progress in Biopharma and Space Sectors

In a recent interview on Sansad TV, Dr. Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, engaged in a comprehensive discussion with Shri Vijay Tankha, a Member of Rajya Sabha. The conversation focused on India’s advancements in the biopharma and space sectors, as well as the government’s initiatives in governance and climate action. Dr. Singh emphasized the transformative changes in these fields, highlighting the role of innovation and collaboration in driving India’s growth.

Advancements in the Space Sector

Dr. Jitendra Singh underscored the remarkable transformation of India’s space sector. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for implementing reforms that opened the sector to private investments. This shift has significantly boosted the space economy, which has grown to $8 billion and is expected to reach $44 billion in the next decade.

Key milestones in this journey include the indigenous Gaganyaan Mission, which aims to send Indian astronauts into space, and the upcoming Chandrayaan-4 mission scheduled for 2027. Additionally, the Shukrayaan mission, targeting Venus, is set for 2028, while the Indian Space Station is planned for 2030. These ambitious projects showcase India’s robust trajectory in space exploration and technology.

Dr. Singh also highlighted the importance of startups and foreign direct investment (FDI) in fueling innovation within the sector. Initiatives like SPADEX, which focuses on developing docking capabilities, mark significant technological advancements. Furthermore, the Vyom Mitra robo mission serves as a precursor to human space exploration, demonstrating India’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of science and technology.

The Role of Biomanufacturing in Economic Growth

In the realm of biopharma, Dr. Singh discussed the potential of biomanufacturing and biofoundries to drive the Fourth Industrial Revolution. He pointed out that India’s bio-economy, supported by its diverse resources from the Himalayas to the coastlines, is poised for significant growth. As one of the first nations to establish a dedicated bio-economy policy, India is set to lead global innovation in recycling, manufacturing, and startups in this sector.

Dr. Singh reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fostering knowledge sharing, public-private partnerships, and encouraging startup participation. He emphasized that these collaborative efforts are essential for sustaining growth in the biopharma industry. The introduction of the BIO-E3 policy further positions India as a pioneer in this field, aiming to enhance the country’s capabilities in biotechnology and related sectors.

Citizen-Centric Governance and Climate Action

Dr. Singh also highlighted the shift towards citizen-centric governance under PM Modi’s leadership. Initiatives such as Mission Karmayogi are redefining the bureaucratic landscape by focusing on role-based capacity building. Digital innovations, including a face-recognition-enabled digital life certificate, have simplified processes for citizens, making governance more accessible and efficient.

Moreover, India’s commitment to combating climate change was a key point of discussion. Dr. Singh reiterated the importance of PM Modi’s Mission LiFE, which promotes sustainable living practices. He emphasized India’s leadership in preventive healthcare, aligning with global standards to address health and environmental challenges.

India’s proactive approach to climate action and governance has established it as a reliable partner on the world stage. The collaborative environment fostered under PM Modi’s leadership has positioned India as a hub for startups, businesses, and industries, reinforcing its status as a leader in technology, sustainability, and governance.
