India’s Pharma-MedTech Sector Boosted by PRIP Dialogue

The Department of Pharmaceuticals, Government of India, convened an Industry Dialogue on March 25, 2025, in Bangalore to discuss the Promotion of Research and Innovation in the Pharma-MedTech Sector (PRIP). This event brought together industry leaders, startups, and research institutions, including the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) and the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). The dialogue aimed to enhance collaboration and leverage government initiatives to accelerate research and development in these critical sectors.

Insights into the PRIP Scheme

The Industry Dialogue provided a comprehensive overview of the PRIP Scheme and other government initiatives designed to foster research and innovation in the pharmaceutical and MedTech sectors. Key programs discussed included ICMR’s Patent Mitra, MedTech Mitra, and the Indian Clinical Trial and Education Network (INTENT). These initiatives focus on supporting patent filings, facilitating the innovation journey, conducting clinical trials, and commercializing research outcomes. Additionally, the CSIR’s Innovation Complex and C-CAMP’s incubation facilities were highlighted as vital resources for promoting translational research and collaboration between industry and academia.

Strengthening Global Supply Chains

Shri Amit Agrawal, Secretary of the Department of Pharmaceuticals, emphasized India’s potential to enhance the resilience of global supply chains through the PRIP Scheme. He advocated for a shift from “Make in India” to “Innovate in India” and “Make for the World,” aiming to position India as a global leader in innovation and manufacturing. This vision reflects the government’s commitment to fostering a robust ecosystem that supports both local and international markets.

Collaborative Feedback and Future Directions

During breakout sessions, participants from startups, industry, and academia provided valuable feedback on research and innovation opportunities. They discussed emerging R&D trends and strategies to strengthen collaboration between industry and academia. Suggestions included maximizing funding opportunities and scaling innovative research initiatives to drive growth in the sector. Stakeholders were encouraged to submit their feedback and project details through the Expression of Interest (EoI) on the Department of Pharmaceuticals website, which will remain open until April 7, 2025. This feedback will help refine the PRIP Scheme’s implementation strategy, ensuring it meets industry needs and promotes sectoral growth.

A Commitment to Innovation

The Industry Dialogue in Bangalore proved to be an insightful and productive event, with participants reaffirming their dedication to creating a collaborative, innovation-driven ecosystem in the Pharma-MedTech sector. The discussions highlighted the importance of partnerships and government support in advancing research and development, ultimately aiming to enhance India’s position in the global market.
