India’s Journey Towards 100% Electrification
India is on a transformative journey to ensure that electricity is accessible to every household. Union Minister Shri Manohar Lal recently emphasized this goal during a press conference in New Delhi. He highlighted the government’s commitment to achieving 100% electrification across the country. This ambitious initiative aims to improve the quality of life for millions of citizens by providing reliable power supply. The minister outlined several key achievements and future plans that underline the government’s dedication to this cause.
Power Accessibility and Focus on Vulnerable Areas
The Indian government has implemented various initiatives to enhance power accessibility, particularly in rural and underserved regions. Programs such as the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY) and the PM Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana (SAUBHAGYA) have played a crucial role in this effort. These initiatives have significantly improved the electricity supply in the last decade.
According to Shri Manohar Lal, the average electricity supply in rural areas has increased from 12.5 hours per day in 2014 to an expected 22.6 hours by 2025. Urban areas are also seeing improvements, with supply projected to reach 23.4 hours. The government is particularly focused on ensuring that tribal and border areas receive adequate power. The Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan aims to support Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTG) in accessing electricity. This targeted approach not only enhances the quality of life but also fosters economic development in these regions.
Growth in Power Generation Capacity
India’s power generation capacity has seen remarkable growth over the past decade. The Union Minister reported that fossil-based power capacity has risen from 168 GW in 2014 to 246 GW by January 2025, marking an increase of approximately 46%. This growth is essential for meeting the rising energy demands of the country.
In addition to fossil fuels, non-fossil fuel capacity has also surged. It has grown from around 80 GW in 2014 to approximately 220 GW in 2025, representing a staggering increase of about 180%. This shift towards renewable energy sources is crucial for India’s commitment to sustainable development and reducing carbon emissions. The government is actively promoting solar, wind, and other renewable energy projects to diversify the energy mix and ensure a greener future.
Expansion of Transmission Networks
The expansion of the transmission network is another critical aspect of India’s electrification efforts. Shri Manohar Lal highlighted that the transmission network has increased from 2.91 lakh circuit kilometers (ckm) in 2014 to an anticipated 4.92 lakh ckm by 2025. This expansion is vital for ensuring that electricity generated in one region can be efficiently transmitted to areas where it is needed.
The growth in transmission infrastructure not only supports the increased power generation capacity but also enhances the reliability of the electricity supply. Improved transmission networks reduce losses and ensure that power reaches consumers without significant interruptions. This development is particularly important for rural areas, where infrastructure has historically lagged behind urban centers. The government’s focus on expanding transmission capabilities will play a crucial role in achieving its electrification goals.
India’s Transition to a Net Power Exporter
In a significant shift, India has transitioned from being a net importer of electricity to a net exporter. The Union Minister announced that by 2025, India is expected to export 1,625 million units (MU) of power. This marks a dramatic turnaround from 2014, when the country was importing 5,555 MU of electricity.
The increase in power exports reflects the country’s growing energy independence and the success of its electrification initiatives. The government has implemented policies to enhance power generation and improve infrastructure, enabling this transition. This shift not only strengthens India’s energy security but also positions the country as a player in the regional energy market.
