Petrol and Diesel: Ample Supply Guaranteed
India stands as a beacon of energy security, ranking as the world’s fourth-largest refiner and fifth-largest exporter of petroleum products, with refined fuel reaching over 150 nations. The availability of petrol and diesel in the domestic market is structurally assured, with all retail fuel outlets—over 100,000 strong—operating without restrictions. Not a single location has been instructed to ration supplies. While other nations face rationing and fuel price hikes, India remains unaffected and has no intention of implementing emergency measures.
Recent incidents of panic buying at select pumps were fueled by misleading videos circulating on social media. Despite these peaks in demand, all stations continued to dispense fuel without disruption, and oil company depots worked through the night to enhance supplies. Additionally, oil firms have extended credit terms for petrol pumps to alleviate any potential supply issues stemming from working capital challenges.
Crude Oil Supply: Guaranteed Continuity
Despite regional tensions at the Strait of Hormuz, India’s crude oil imports have remained robust, even surpassing previous levels, thanks to a diverse supply chain of over 41 sources worldwide. With every refinery operating at over 100% capacity, Indian oil companies have secured crude oil supplies for the next 60 days, ensuring that there will be no supply gaps.
Strategic Reserves: A Misguided Narrative
Contrary to circulating rumors claiming a mere six days’ worth of reserves, India possesses a substantial total reserve capacity of 74 days, with current actual stock covering about 60 days. This shortfall includes crude stocks and dedicated strategic storage facilities. Even amid the regional crisis, India retains a steady two-month supply in hand.
LPG: Production Surpasses Demand
There is no shortage of LPG, as domestic refinery output has been increased by 40%, now producing 50 TMT daily, which exceeds more than 60% of the nation’s requirement. Consequently, the necessity for imports has decreased to just 30 TMT. Moreover, 800 TMT of LPG cargoes from the U.S., Russia, and Australia are on the way, securing additional supplies. Oil companies are continuing to deliver more than 5 million cylinders per day, with allocations for commercial cylinders raised to 50% to mitigate hoarding.
PNGas: A Strategic Transition for Households
The promotion of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) across the nation is a strategic move to provide a cleaner, safer, and more economical option for households. India’s current production of natural gas stands at 92 MMSCMD out of a total requirement of 191 MMSCMD. This transition reflects a long-term energy strategy, not a hurried response to a crisis.

The Ministry has expressed deep concern over misleading content on social media that aims to create panic by depicting false queues and global news footage from nations experiencing fuel shortages. The government is clear: any assertions suggesting an impending crisis are false and should not be believed.
