India’s Expanding Space Sector: Focus on Satcom and Global Partnerships
At the 3rd Indian Space Conclave in New Delhi, Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development Dr. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani emphasized the transformative power of space technology, particularly Satellite Communication (Satcom), in bringing connectivity to every part of India. He highlighted that Satcom is not just an extension of terrestrial networks but a complementary force, critical to achieving the goals of Digital India by extending digital connectivity to even the remotest areas.
A Vision for Satellite Communication
During the session “Advancing Space Communications and Global Partnerships,” Dr. Pemmasani noted that Satcom’s applications span multiple sectors integral to India’s growth. “The applications of Satcom extend across sectors vital to our people’s everyday lives and India’s sustained growth,” he said, highlighting its role in education, healthcare, disaster response, and economic empowerment.
The session also discussed India’s emergence as a prominent player in the space sector, with the Minister crediting progressive policies and landmark projects, such as Chandrayaan and the upcoming Gaganyaan mission, for strengthening India’s global presence in space exploration. According to Dr. Pemmasani, Satcom acts as a key enabler for enterprise solutions, meeting the evolving needs of a modern economy. He elaborated that policies like SatCom Reform 2022 have opened doors for both public and private sector players, creating an environment where innovation in the space sector thrives.
Collaborative Frameworks and Policy Development
Ms. Madhu Arora, Member (Technology), Department of Telecommunications, also addressed the conclave, focusing on Satcom’s potential to provide vast, reliable connectivity, especially in disaster scenarios. She emphasized the importance of collaboration among national and international stakeholders to address complex issues like spectrum management, space debris mitigation, and cybersecurity.
The event, organized by the Indian Space Association (ISPA), brought together policymakers, industry leaders, and academia to foster dialogue on various Satcom-focused topics, including:
