India’s Esports Championship Set for 2025

The Esports Championship 2025, organized by the Esports Federation of India (ESFI), is gearing up to be a landmark event in India’s burgeoning esports landscape. Scheduled to take place from May 1-4, 2025, at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai, this championship is part of the inaugural World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit (WAVES). With the backing of the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, the event aims to showcase innovation and foster talent in the esports arena.
WAVES: A New Era for Media and Entertainment
The World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit (WAVES) is designed to be a pivotal platform for the Media and Entertainment (M&E) sector. This first edition of WAVES aims to connect global industry leaders with Indian talent, focusing on four key pillars: Broadcasting & Infotainment, AVGC-XR (Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, and Comics – Extended Reality), Digital Media & Innovation, and Films. By bringing together creators, technologists, and leaders, WAVES seeks to highlight the future of India’s entertainment industry.
Esports will play a significant role within the AVGC-XR pillar, emphasizing its importance in the broader M&E landscape. As of mid-February 2025, over 35,000 participants have engaged in the tournament, which features popular games like eFootball and the World Cricket Championship (WCC). These competitions are conducted in batches, culminating in a grand finale where the ultimate champions will be crowned.
Championship Structure and Timeline
The WAVES Esports Championship 2025 (WESC2025) consists of four online qualifying phases, with the eFootball and WCC phases already completed. Winners from these phases will advance to the Grand Finale, which may be held online or offline, as determined by ESFI. Notably, Pavan Kampelli, known as “MrTomboy,” has already secured his spot as the eFootball champion from Phase 1 and will represent India at the Asian Esports Games 2024.
The Grand Finale will serve as the ultimate showdown to determine the champions of WESC2025. Participants are required to adhere to established guidelines throughout the tournament, ensuring a fair and competitive environment. The ESFI retains the right to modify the tournament format as necessary, maintaining flexibility in the event’s structure.
Prizes and Opportunities for Participants
Winners from each qualifying phase will compete in the Main Event of WESC2025, with significant incentives for participants. Airfare, boarding, and lodging expenses for the finalists will be covered, allowing them to focus on their performance without financial concerns. This support underscores the commitment of the ESFI to nurture talent and promote esports in India.
The Esports Championship represents a crucial step in India’s evolving esports scene, blending competition with innovation and talent development. As part of WAVES, it highlights India’s growing influence in the global esports landscape. With exciting opportunities on the horizon, WESC2025 is set to inspire the next generation of esports champions and shape the future of the entertainment industry in India.
