India’s Education Sector Focuses on Future Skills
The Ministry of Education hosted a pivotal Post Budget Webinar titled “Investing in People,” featuring a keynote address from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The event, attended by key figures including Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and UGC Chairman Professor M. Jagadesh Kumar, aimed to discuss essential reforms in education, job creation, and skill development as part of the vision for Viksit Bharat 2047.

The webinar gathered experts from various sectors, including government, industry, and academia, to explore significant reforms aimed at enhancing job creation and academic flexibility. Participants discussed the importance of credit mobility and the development of future-ready skills necessary for a competitive workforce. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan emphasized that the investments outlined in the Union Budget 2025-2026 are crucial for accelerating progress toward Viksit Bharat by 2047. Kumar described the policy as not just reformative but transformative, aimed at equipping youth with the necessary skills and knowledge to thrive in the 21st century.
He stressed that investing in people through quality education, research, and innovation is vital for building a self-reliant and globally competitive economy. Gender Parity in Education Sector
Shri Sanjay Kumar, Secretary of the Department of School Education & Literacy, highlighted the importance of education as an investment in people. He acknowledged the insights shared by the UGC Chairman regarding higher education and noted key announcements in the 2025-26 Budget. These include plans to establish 50,000 Atal Tinkering Labs in government schools over the next five years and to provide broadband internet connectivity to rural government schools.
Additionally, Kumar pointed out a significant trend in the education sector: the increasing proportion of female teachers. In 2014-15, male teachers made up 52% of the total, while female teachers accounted for 48%. By 2025, these figures are expected to reverse, with female teachers projected to represent 52% and male teachers 48%. This shift reflects a move toward greater gender parity in education, which is crucial for fostering an inclusive learning environment.
