India’s Digital Transformation: A Path to Viksit Bharat
India is undergoing a significant digital transformation, aiming to create a “Viksit Bharat” or developed India. This transformation is not just about technology; it is about enhancing the quality of life for citizens and driving economic growth. The digital economy has become a vital part of India’s GDP, contributing 11.74% in the fiscal year 2022-23. With over 14.67 million workers employed in this sector, productivity is five times higher than in other industries. This article explores the key components of India’s digital landscape, including the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), telecom and internet infrastructure, and various government initiatives that are shaping the future.
The Rise of Digital Payments: Unified Payments Interface (UPI)
Launched in 2016, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has revolutionized the way Indians conduct transactions. UPI allows real-time interbank transactions via mobile devices, making digital payments seamless and efficient. According to the ACI Worldwide Report 2024, India accounted for around 49% of global real-time payment transactions in 2023. As of 2023, more than 40% of all payments in India are digital, with UPI leading the charge.
The growth of UPI is staggering. In December 2024, the total value of transactions conducted through UPI reached ₹23,24,699.91 crore, a massive increase from ₹707.93 crore in December 2016. The number of banks participating in UPI has also surged from just 35 in 2016 to 641 by the end of 2024. Furthermore, UPI facilitated 16,730.01 million transactions in December 2024, compared to only 1.99 million in December 2016. UPI’s influence has also crossed borders, enabling live transactions in seven countries, including the UAE, Singapore, and Sri Lanka. This remarkable growth underscores UPI’s role as a cornerstone of India’s digital economy.
Expanding Telecom and Internet Infrastructure
India’s telecom and internet infrastructure has seen remarkable growth over the past decade. Total telephone connections surged from 933 million in March 2014 to 1,188.70 million by October 2024. The tele-density, which measures the number of telephone connections per 100 people, increased from 75.23% to 84.49% during the same period. Urban and rural areas have both benefited, with urban connections rising to 661.36 million and rural connections reaching 527.34 million.
Internet connectivity has also skyrocketed. Internet connections jumped from 25.15 crore in March 2014 to 96.96 crore in June 2024, marking a growth of 285.53%. Broadband connections experienced an even more dramatic increase, rising from 6.1 crore to 94.92 crore during the same timeframe. As of December 2024, 6,15,836 out of 6,44,131 villages in India have 4G mobile connectivity. This rapid expansion of telecom and internet services is crucial for bridging the digital divide and ensuring that all citizens have access to essential services.
Government Initiatives Driving Digital Empowerment
The Indian government has launched several initiatives to promote digital empowerment and enhance citizen services. One of the most notable is Aadhaar, introduced in 2009. Aadhaar provides a unique 12-digit identity number linked to biometric and demographic data for Indian residents. As of March 2023, over 136.65 crore Aadhaar cards have been issued, facilitating numerous e-KYC transactions.
Another significant initiative is DigiLocker, launched in 2015. DigiLocker aims to provide citizens with access to authentic digital documents, thereby promoting digital empowerment. As of February 2025, the platform has 46.52 crore users, showcasing its popularity and utility.
The UMANG app, launched in 2017, further enhances mobile governance by providing a single platform for accessing various government services. As of December 2024, UMANG recorded 7.34 crore user registrations and 516.06 crore transactions. These initiatives collectively contribute to a more efficient and transparent governance system, empowering citizens and fostering trust in digital services.
