India’s Construction Sector Urged to Embrace Sustainability

Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, addressed industry leaders at CAPEXILโ€™s Vibrant Buildcon 2025, emphasizing the urgent need for sustainable practices in construction. He called for a reduction in import dependency and a focus on clean, green building methods, alongside the development of earthquake-resistant and modular infrastructure. Goyal highlighted India’s growing capabilities in the construction sector, driven by initiatives like Make in India.

Strengthening India’s Construction Ecosystem

During his address, Minister Goyal underscored the significant advancements in India’s construction ecosystem, which now includes Global Capability Centres (GCCs) and a robust domestic manufacturing base. He pointed out that various sectors, such as housing, infrastructure, commercial real estate, railways, airports, highways, and energy, are integral to this ecosystem. โ€œEvery element, from cement and electricals to security systems and automation, plays a part in this ecosystem,โ€ he stated, highlighting the interconnectedness of these industries.

Goyal attributed the rapid infrastructure development to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who conceptualized world-class venues like Bharat Mandapam and Yashobhoomi. These facilities, constructed during the pandemic, have successfully hosted significant global events, including the G20 Summit and Startup Mahakumbh. This progress reflects India’s commitment to enhancing its infrastructure capabilities even in challenging times.

Government Initiatives for Future Growth

In his speech, Goyal outlined several major government initiatives aimed at bolstering the construction sector. These include the establishment of 20 new smart industrial cities, improvements to tourism infrastructure across 50 destinations, and the creation of 100 new industrial plug-and-play hubs. He emphasized that to transition from a $4 trillion economy today to a $30-35 trillion economy by 2047, collective effort is essential. โ€œEvery citizen must contribute to Viksit Bharat 2047,โ€ he urged, calling for a united approach to national development.

Goyal also noted that India is breaking down silos and fostering collaboration among various stakeholders. He described Vibrant Buildcon as a pivotal moment in the transformation of the construction ecosystem, bringing together diverse minds to innovate and improve the industry.

Linking Food Security and Infrastructure Development

On the occasion of Baisakhi, Goyal acknowledged the critical role of farmers during the COVID-19 pandemic, stating that India ensured uninterrupted food distribution despite global disruptions. He praised the government’s efforts to feed the poor and uplift millions from deprivation during the crisis. Drawing a connection between food security and infrastructure growth, he asserted that Vibrant Buildcon exemplifies India’s capacity to support rapid urbanization, housing for all, and logistics transformation.

โ€œThis platform showcases our manufacturing and infrastructure strength, which is crucial to attract global investments and reduce logistics costs,โ€ he added, reinforcing the importance of a robust infrastructure in achieving food security and economic stability.

A Vision for India’s Future

In conclusion, Goyal expressed confidence in India’s potential to emerge as a global superpower. He called for ambitious goals, fair wages for the labor force, and continuous innovation. โ€œLet there be no doubtโ€”India will lead the world in growth, innovation, and inclusive development,โ€ he declared, inspiring stakeholders to work towards a prosperous future for the nation.
