Indian Yoga Association and State Chapters Commemorate World Earth Day

In a remarkable initiative to promote environmental sustainability, the Indian Yoga Association (IYA) celebrated World Earth Day on April 22, 2025, with a nationwide tree plantation drive under the โ€˜Harit Yogaโ€™ campaign. This event, part of the International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2025, emphasizes the connection between yoga practices and environmental consciousness. The drive witnessed participation from various state chapters, highlighting a collective commitment to a greener future.

Nationwide Participation and Commitment

The Harit Yoga initiative saw active involvement from 12 state chapters of the IYA, including Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, Nagaland, New Delhi, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Pune, Jaipur, and Uttarakhand. This extensive participation underscores the importance of integrating yoga’s principles with environmental stewardship. The event at the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY) in New Delhi featured Shri P.N. Ranjit Kumar, OSD-IDY Coordination from the Ministry of Ayush, as the Chief Guest. He emphasized the significance of eco-conscious living as a fundamental aspect of holistic wellness. The initiative aims to convey that yoga is not just about personal health but also about nurturing the planet’s vitality.

Special Activities and Community Engagement

In addition to the tree plantation efforts, a special yoga session was organized in Jaipur to promote physical, mental, and environmental well-being. Participants enjoyed Ayurvedic drinks and formed a human chain to symbolize unity in environmental stewardship. In Chhattisgarh, the IYA State Chapter conducted a tree plantation drive at Teli Gundar School in Durg district, where medicinal plants were planted, and protective tree guards were installed. Similar activities across various states engaged diverse stakeholders, including nature clubs, NGOs, yoga institutions, and government bodies, showcasing the synergy between yoga and environmental action.

Voices of Support and Inspiration

Maa Dr. Hansaji Yogendra, President of IYA and Director of The Yoga Institute, praised the Ministry of Ayush for launching the Harit Yoga initiative. She highlighted the intrinsic connection between sustainable living and yoga, reinforcing the idea that the well-being of the planet and its inhabitants are deeply intertwined. Swami Chidanand Saraswati, a member of the IYA Governing Council, urged citizens to embrace the deeper essence of yoga, which fosters harmony between individuals and nature. Other dignitaries echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the spiritual bond between humanity and the Earth, and the importance of individual efforts in promoting a greener planet.

Broader Goals of the Harit Yoga Initiative

The Harit Yoga campaign, launched in Bhubaneswar by the Union Minister of State for Ayush, integrates yoga principles with environmental sustainability. It advocates for mindful living in harmony with nature. The initiative aims to engage various stakeholders in promoting sustainable practices and educational campaigns focused on climate change and conservation. Activities planned for this year include beach clean-ups, tree plantations, and eco-Yoga experiences, all designed to foster a holistic approach to well-being. The plantation drive serves as a powerful symbol of the connection between yoga and the global call for environmental stewardship, reinforcing the Ministry of Ayush’s vision of promoting overall health that encompasses both individual wellness and the planet’s vitality.
