Indian Start-Up Sparks Debate Over Convenience and Entitlement with Shopping Bag Service
Imagine a bustling market in Delhi where shoppers can hire assistants to carry their bags or push strollers, making their shopping experience much more manageable. This innovative service is offered by a new startup called CarryMen, which launched in April. For a fee starting at just 79 rupees (approximately $0.83), customers can hire male or female assistants for up to four hours. While many shoppers have embraced this convenience, the service has sparked a debate about entitlement and the nature of gig work in India.
Convenience in Crowded Markets
CarryMen was founded by friends Ritu Kandari Srivastava and Kanishka Malhotra, both of whom are mothers of young children. The idea for the startup emerged during a challenging shopping trip in Lajpat Nagar, where they struggled to manage their shopping bags while navigating the crowded market with strollers. They noticed an elderly woman facing similar difficulties and realized there was a need for assistance in such environments. After discussing the concept with their families, they registered the company, obtained necessary permits, and set up a kiosk in the market.
The service quickly gained popularity, with customers appreciating the help provided by CarryMen. Shoppers can hire assistants for various tasks, including carrying bags, guiding them through the market, and even queuing for food. The founders have trained their staff to ensure they provide courteous and efficient service, making shopping a more pleasant experience for those who need extra help.
Public Reaction and Controversy
The launch of CarryMen has generated mixed reactions on social media. While many view it as a creative solution to urban shopping challenges, critics argue that it reflects a sense of entitlement among the affluent. Some have labeled the assistants as “glorified coolies,” suggesting that the service exploits workers in the gig economy. This backlash intensified after AI-generated images circulated online, depicting wealthy women as potential customers, further fueling the debate.
Labour rights activists have expressed concerns about the implications of such services, warning that they may contribute to the exploitation of workers. However, the founders of CarryMen have firmly rejected these accusations, emphasizing that their employees are full-time staff with fair salaries, not gig workers. They argue that their service is designed to assist those who struggle with mobility in crowded markets, rather than catering solely to the wealthy.
Client Experiences and Future Plans
Despite the controversy, many clients have found value in the service. A significant portion of CarryMen’s customers includes pregnant women, elderly individuals, and those with disabilities. One of the first customers was a pregnant woman who appreciated the assistance provided by the CarryMen. The staff are trained to handle various tasks, including managing prams and carrying essential items like water bottles and portable chargers.
As the service continues to grow, the founders plan to expand to other busy markets in Delhi, such as Chandni Chowk. They have already seen an increase in bookings, with an average of six to nine requests per day on weekends. Customers like Jatinder and Anita Sabharwal, who recently used the service, expressed satisfaction with the assistance they received, allowing them to shop more comfortably without the burden of heavy bags.
Challenges Ahead for CarryMen
While CarryMen has experienced initial success, challenges remain. The startup currently employs seven full-time staff members, but expansion will require additional funding and resources. Labour activists have raised concerns about the sustainability of the model, noting that many gig economy startups begin with high payouts but often reduce benefits as they scale. The founders are aware of these challenges and are committed to maintaining fair employment practices as they grow.
As CarryMen navigates this complex landscape, it remains to be seen how the service will evolve and whether it can sustain its mission of providing valuable assistance to those in need while addressing the concerns raised by critics.
