Indian Railways Unveils 2026 Timetable: 549 Trains Accelerated and 122 New Services Introduced
Indian Railways has launched an extensive timetable overhaul as part of its Timetable of Trains (TAG) 2026 initiative. This ambitious plan introduces 122 new trains and accelerates 549 existing services across the country. The primary goals are to reduce travel times, enhance punctuality, and improve overall operational efficiency. The changes reflect a significant commitment to passenger convenience and connectivity throughout all railway zones.
122 New Trains Introduced Across Various Categories
As part of the TAG 2026 rollout, Indian Railways has introduced a total of 122 new trains, with the majority being 60 Mail/Express services. Additionally, 28 Vande Bharat trains have been added to bolster semi-high-speed connectivity. The new offerings also include 26 Amrit Bharat trains, two Rajdhani trains, two Jan Shatabdi trains, two Humsafar trains, and two Namo Bharat Rapid Rail services. Some of these services were launched under the TAG–Time on Demand (TAG-TOD) framework, which aims to provide more flexible travel options for passengers.
549 Trains Speeded Up to Enhance Punctuality
In a bid to improve punctuality, Indian Railways has sped up 549 trains across various zones. Among these, 376 trains have had their travel times reduced by 5 to 15 minutes, while 105 trains saw reductions of 16 to 30 minutes. Furthermore, 48 trains experienced a decrease in travel time of 31 to 59 minutes, and 20 trains were sped up by 60 minutes or more. These adjustments are expected to significantly enhance the travel experience for passengers on key routes.
Zone-wise Expansion and Speed Upgrades
The changes under TAG 2026 vary significantly across different railway zones. The South Western Railway (SWR) has emerged as the largest beneficiary, introducing eight new trains and speeding up 117 services, the highest among all zones. The North Western Railway (NWR) added 12 new trains and accelerated 89 services, while the Western Railway (WR) introduced 10 new trains and sped up 80 services. Other zones, such as the Southern Railway (SR) and Northern Railway (NR), also made notable contributions, with the SR adding six new trains and speeding up 75 services, and the NR introducing 20 new trains and speeding up 24 services.
A Diverse Mix of Train Services
The 122 new trains encompass a diverse range of services, including 60 Mail/Express trains, eight of which fall under the TAG–Time on Demand (TAG-TOD) framework. Additionally, the introduction of 28 Vande Bharat trains aims to enhance semi-high-speed travel. The rollout also features 26 Amrit Bharat trains, along with two each of Rajdhani, Jan Shatabdi, Humsafar, and Namo Bharat Rapid Rail services. This mix of premium, express, and passenger trains is designed to cater to a wide array of travel needs, ensuring that passengers have more options than ever before.
