Indian Railways Enhances Connectivity with New Underground Rail Route Through Siliguri Corridor

In a significant move to enhance connectivity in India’s northeastern region, the Indian Railways has unveiled plans for a new underground railway line traversing the Siliguri Corridor, often referred to as the “Chicken’s Neck.” This initiative aims to bolster secure and reliable rail access to the strategically important area, as stated by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The project is expected to not only improve transportation but also address security vulnerabilities in this sensitive region.

Route Details

The proposed railway line will be part of the Katihar Division of the Northeast Frontier Railway. It will commence at Tinmile Hat and extend to Rangapani, ultimately reaching Bagdogra. Along its route, the railway will pass through key areas in the Darjeeling and Uttar Dinajpur districts of West Bengal, as well as the Kishanganj district in Bihar. This strategic alignment is designed to enhance connectivity between mainland India and the northeastern states, facilitating smoother travel and trade in the region.

Length and Specifications

The underground railway alignment will span a total of 35.76 kilometers, with the section from Dumdangi to Rangapani measuring 33.40 kilometers. The corridor, which is approximately 22 kilometers wide, has been planned primarily as an underground route to ensure secure and resilient connectivity. This design is particularly important given the area’s geographical and strategic significance, as it serves as a vital link between India and its northeastern states.

Security and Protection Measures

Given the corridor’s proximity to international borders with Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh, as well as its susceptibility to natural disasters and security threats, the underground railway line is poised to play a crucial role in enhancing regional security. The alignment will provide a concealed route, facilitating the uninterrupted movement of defense personnel, military equipment, and emergency relief supplies during crises. Its strategic location near the Bagdogra Air Force Station and the Bengdubi Army Cantonment further supports the integration of air and rail logistics, ensuring a robust defense infrastructure.

Technological Advancements

The development of this project will incorporate modern technology and advanced engineering practices. Key features include a 2×25 kV AC electrification system, Automatic Signalling (Standard-IV) with VOIP-based communication over optical fiber cables, and bridges constructed to meet RDSO 25-ton axle load standards. The construction will utilize the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) method for twin tunnels, along with NATM tunnels for crossovers. Minister Vaishnaw emphasized that the Tinmile Hat–Rangapani–Bagdogra underground line exemplifies the railways’ commitment to enhancing strategic infrastructure in the Northeast. Furthermore, West Bengal has received a record budget allocation of Rs. 14,205 crore for railways this year, significantly more than previous allocations, indicating a strong focus on infrastructural development in the region.
