Indian Railways Addresses Unauthorized Automated Bookings and Enhances Website

In a significant move to enhance transparency and user experience, Indian Railways has initiated a comprehensive digital transformation of its ticketing system. This overhaul includes the implementation of advanced anti-BOT technology and collaboration with a leading Content Delivery Network (CDN) provider. These measures have effectively reduced unauthorized automated bookings, ensuring that genuine users have better access to the ticketing platform.
Combatting Unauthorized Bookings
The new ticketing system has successfully addressed the issue of bot traffic, particularly during peak booking times such as the first five minutes of the Tatkal scheme. During this critical period, bot traffic can account for nearly 50% of all login attempts. By mitigating this traffic, Indian Railways has improved accessibility for legitimate users. As a result, approximately 2.5 crore suspected user IDs have been deactivated to prevent fraudulent ticket purchases. A notable milestone was achieved on May 22, 2025, when the platform recorded an unprecedented booking rate of 31,814 tickets per minute, demonstrating the effectiveness and scalability of the upgraded system.
New User Protocols for Fairness
To further promote fairness in ticket bookings, Indian Railways has introduced new user protocols. Users who are not authenticated through Aadhaar will face a three-day waiting period before they can book Opening ARP, Tatkal, or Premium Tatkal tickets. In contrast, users verified by Aadhaar can book tickets immediately. These changes aim to streamline the booking process and ensure that all users have equitable access to tickets, thereby enhancing the overall user experience.
Impressive Growth in User Engagement
The digital enhancements have led to significant improvements in user engagement. The average daily logins rose from 69.08 lakh in the fiscal year 2023-24 to 82.57 lakh in 2024-25, marking a 19.53% increase. Similarly, the average daily ticket bookings saw an 11.85% growth during the same period. E-Ticketing has become increasingly popular, now representing 86.38% of all reserved ticket bookings. This shift underscores the effectiveness of the new system in accommodating a growing number of users.
Systemic Upgrades for Enhanced Performance
The upgrades to the ticketing system include several key improvements. Notably, 87% of static content is now delivered via CDN, resulting in faster load times and reduced server strain. Additionally, sophisticated AI algorithms are employed for the active detection and mitigation of bot traffic. The proactive deactivation of suspicious user IDs and the ability to lodge complaints through the Cyber Crime Portal further enhance the security of the platform. Indian Railways, through its subsidiary IRCTC, remains dedicated to providing a seamless and secure ticketing experience, with ongoing innovation and modernization at the forefront of its efforts to protect the interests of millions of passengers nationwide.
