Indian Railways Achieves Record Passenger Traffic During 2024 Festive Season
In an impressive effort to accommodate the high demand for travel during India’s festive season, Indian Railways successfully transported 65 lakh passengers on 4,521 special trains between October 1 and November 5, 2024. These trains, scheduled for popular festivals such as Durga Puja, Diwali, and Chhath Puja, enabled lakhs of passengers to reach their destinations comfortably and without delay. This achievement underscores Indian Railways’ dedication to enhancing accessibility and easing travel during peak periods.
Scaling Up Services for Festive Demand
To cater to the surge in travel demand for October 1 to November 30, Indian Railways has launched 7,724 special trains—a significant 73% increase from last year’s 4,429 special services. This expansion in service illustrates the organization’s commitment to providing uninterrupted travel options during the busiest time of the year.
In the lead-up to Chhath Puja, the railways operated approximately 175 special trains daily over the past four days, ensuring passengers could reach their destinations on time for the celebration.
Preparing for the Chhath Puja Return Rush
Indian Railways is now gearing up to manage the anticipated post-Chhath Puja return rush starting on November 8, 2024. To meet this demand, they have announced an additional 164 special trains on that day, with further expansions planned:
- November 9: 160 special trains
- November 10: 161 special trains
- November 11: 155 special trains
Additional trains will be deployed in high-demand divisions like Samastipur and Danapur to ensure a smooth return journey for all passengers.
Record-Breaking Single-Day Passenger Traffic
On November 4, 2024, Indian Railways set a new record for single-day passenger traffic, transporting 120.72 lakh passengers. This included:
- 19.43 lakh reserved passengers
- 101.29 lakh unreserved non-suburban passengers
Suburban traffic also hit an all-time high with 180 lakh passengers on the same day, marking it as the busiest travel day of the year.
This significant achievement not only showcases Indian Railways’ ability to handle high passenger volumes but also highlights its role in uniting people across regions during India’s most celebrated festive season.
