Indian Para-Badminton Team Honored for Record Medal Win at Paris 2024 Paralympics

Union Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports and Labour & Employment, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, welcomed the Indian Para-Badminton team back to India today in New Delhi. The team had their best-ever performance at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, winning 5 medals: 1 Gold, 2 Silver, and 2 Bronze.
Dr. Mandaviya praised the athletes, saying, “You have made the whole country proud with your amazing performance. Your hard work and spirit have set a new standard for Indian sports.”
For the athletes who came close to winning medals but didnโt, Dr. Mandaviya shared encouraging words. He said, “We haven’t lost medals; we have gained valuable experience. I believe that in the next Paralympics, we will win even more medals, and all of you will be champions.”
Dr. Mandaviya also talked about Indiaโs progress in international sports over the past 10 years, both in the Olympics and Paralympics. โIn the last decade, we have continuously improved and shown our strength on the world stage,โ he said.
The Minister assured the athletes that the government is committed to supporting them with better facilities, training, and opportunities to help them succeed at the highest levels. He encouraged them to keep aiming higher in future competitions.
The five medal winners are Nitesh Kumar (Gold), Suhas LY (Silver), Thulasimathi Murugesan (Silver), Nithya Sre (Bronze), and Manisha Ramadass (Bronze).
As of September 03, 2024, India has won a total of 20 medals at the Paris Paralympics, surpassing the 19 medals won at the Tokyo Paralympics.
The para-athletes shared their experiences and thanked the government for its support, especially through the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS). They said this program gave them the facilities and resources they needed to do well in their sports.
The Government of India arranged 19 foreign training trips for the 13 para-badminton players who took part in the Paris Paralympics.
