Indian Navy’s Chief to Strengthen Ties with Australia, New Zealand
Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, Chief of the Naval Staff of India, is set to embark on an official visit to Australia and New Zealand beginning September 9, 2026. This visit aims to bolster the Indian Navy’s cooperation with both the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) and the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) amidst growing strategic collaborations in the Indo-Pacific region.
The trip to Australia comes after significant progress in India–Australia relations, building on the discussions held during the Third India-Australia Annual Summit in July 2026 and the Second India–Australia Defence Ministers’ Dialogue in June 2026. These events have marked a deepening of defense and security cooperation, especially in areas related to maritime security.
Bilateral Discussions in Australia
During his time in Australia, Admiral Swaminathan will engage in crucial bilateral talks with top leadership of the RAN and senior Australian defense officials. Their discussions will center on reviewing existing naval cooperation, while also exploring new pathways for enhancing operational interaction, interoperability, information sharing, training, and professional exchanges.
Part of the visit will include tours of key operational and training facilities, providing an opportunity for direct interaction between Admiral Swaminathan and the personnel of the RAN. Topics of conversation will encompass maritime capabilities, emerging technologies, and professional military education, reflecting the expanding scope of cooperation between the two naval forces.
Strengthening Relations with New Zealand
Following his engagements in Australia, the CNS will head to New Zealand, where he will capitalize on the recent momentum in India–New Zealand relations. This follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to New Zealand in July 2026, during which the two nations formalized their partnership into a Strategic Partnership, emphasizing enhanced collaboration in defense and maritime security.
In New Zealand, the CNS’s agenda includes discussions with the RNZN leadership and senior defense officials. Again, the focus will be on fortifying operational interaction, information sharing, training, and professional exchanges between the Indian Navy and the RNZN.
Admiral Swaminathan will also tour crucial operational and training establishments, where he will meet personnel from the Royal New Zealand Navy and those involved in professional military education. The visit holds added significance following the recently established Maritime Cooperation Arrangement, which aims to expand the framework for maritime cooperation.
