Indian Army Delivers Eye Care to Veterans
The Indian Army recently hosted a specialized eye surgical camp at the 158 Base Hospital in Bagdogra, West Bengal, from March 20 to 24, 2025. This initiative aimed to provide advanced ophthalmic care to ex-servicemen and their families, screening 1,752 individuals for various eye conditions, including cataracts. A dedicated team of medical professionals performed over 350 cataract surgeries during the five-day event, showcasing the Army’s commitment to veteran healthcare.
Comprehensive Eye Care Services Offered
The eye surgical camp was a significant undertaking, with a focus on delivering high-quality medical services to veterans. A total of 1,752 ex-servicemen and their dependents were screened for a range of ophthalmic issues. The expert medical team, which included specialists from the Army Hospital (Research & Referral) in New Delhi, the Base Hospital in Delhi Cantt, and the Command Hospital in Lucknow, conducted more than 350 cataract surgeries. This initiative not only addressed immediate medical needs but also emphasized the importance of regular eye health check-ups for veterans. In addition to surgeries, the camp provided over 500 pairs of high-quality eyeglasses at no cost. The use of advanced equipment and premium lenses ensured that patients received optimal care. This effort aligns with the Ministry of Defence’s commitment to enhancing healthcare services for veterans, under the leadership of Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh.
International Participation from Nepal
A notable aspect of the camp was the participation of ophthalmic patients from Nepal. Seventeen ex-servicemen and their dependents from across the border were screened for eye ailments, with some receiving cataract surgeries free of charge. This cross-border initiative highlights the Indian Army’s dedication to providing healthcare not only to Indian veterans but also to those who have served alongside them in neighboring countries. The inclusion of Nepalese veterans underscores the Army’s broader commitment to regional cooperation and support for all veterans in the region. Leadership and Commitment to Veteran Care
The eye surgical camp was spearheaded by Brig Sanjay Kumar Mishra, an esteemed ophthalmic surgeon and Head of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Army Hospital (Research & Referral) in New Delhi. Brig Mishra, who has performed over 100,000 successful eye surgeries, emphasized the importance of bringing world-class medical treatment directly to veterans in remote areas. He noted that this initiative allowed veterans from West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, and even Nepal to receive essential care without the burden of extensive travel.
This camp was conducted under the directives of Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh and Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi, following a request from West Bengal Governor Shri CV Ananda Bose. The initiative reflects the unwavering commitment of the Indian Army to ensure that high-quality medical services are accessible to veterans, particularly in the eastern sector of India.
