Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to Visit Uzbekistan for Key Meetings

India’s Finance Minister, Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman, will visit Uzbekistan from 24th to 28th September 2024. She will lead a team of officials from the Ministry of Finance. This trip will include important meetings and discussions with international leaders and organizations.

Attending AIIB Annual Meeting

Smt. Sitharaman will attend the Ninth Annual Meeting of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) in Samarkand on 25th and 26th September. The AIIB meeting will have representatives from around 80 countries. This meeting will focus on various global issues related to infrastructure development and sustainable growth.

India is a key member of the AIIB and is the second-largest shareholder in the bank. As India’s Governor to the AIIB, the Finance Minister will engage in discussions about future development projects and global financial matters.

Bilateral Meetings with Global Leaders

During her visit, the Union Finance Minister will also meet leaders from Uzbekistan, Qatar, China, and the AIIB President. These bilateral meetings will focus on strengthening India’s relationships with these countries and exploring new opportunities for cooperation in areas like trade and infrastructure.

Signing of Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) with Uzbekistan

A major highlight of the trip will be the signing of a Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) between India and Uzbekistan. This agreement will be signed by Smt. Sitharaman and Uzbekistan’s Minister for Investment, Industry, and Trade. The goal of the BIT is to promote long-term economic cooperation between the two countries. It will encourage more trade and investment, benefiting both nations.

Participation in India-Uzbekistan Business Forum

Smt. Sitharaman will also take part in the India-Uzbekistan Business Forum, where industry leaders from both countries will discuss ways to increase economic cooperation. This forum will provide opportunities for businesses from India and Uzbekistan to explore partnerships and joint ventures.

Other Important Visits

As part of her visit, the Finance Minister will also visit Samarkand State University and the Lal Bahadur Shastri Monument in Tashkent. She will also meet with the Indian diaspora in Uzbekistan, including prominent voices from various industries.
