India Unveils Enhanced Microdata Portal for Statistics

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI) has launched a revamped Microdata Portal, a significant advancement in data accessibility and user experience. This initiative was announced during the recent Conference of State Government Ministers, showcasing the integration of advanced technologies into the Official Statistical System. The new portal, designed in collaboration with the World Bank Technology Team, addresses previous technological limitations and offers a centralized repository for extensive statistical data.

Revamped Portal Enhances Data Accessibility

The newly launched Microdata Portal serves as a comprehensive repository for statistical data collected from national surveys and economic censuses. This upgraded platform overcomes the technological challenges faced by its predecessor, ensuring a more user-friendly experience. The MOSPI has implemented a modern, scalable technology stack that adheres to the latest security standards. Additionally, the portal features a responsive design, allowing users to access data seamlessly across various devices. Interested users can visit the portal at microdata.gov.in.

New Website for Capacity Building Initiatives

Alongside the Microdata Portal, MOSPI also launched the website for the National Statistical System Training Academy. This new platform aims to centralize information regarding the ministry’s capacity-building initiatives, making it easier for stakeholders to access relevant resources. The website can be accessed at nssta.gov.in. Both the portal and the training academy website were developed in-house by the Data Informatics & Innovation Division of the ministry, reflecting a commitment to enhancing the statistical framework in India.

AI-Driven Tools to Improve Data Collection

During the conference, MOSPI presented a Proof of Concept (PoC) for an AI/ML-based classification tool. This innovative tool is designed to simplify the use of the National Industrial Classification (NIC) in the production of official statistics. By leveraging natural language processing, stakeholders can input text queries, and the tool will suggest the top five relevant NIC codes. This advancement not only minimizes manual effort but also boosts the productivity of enumerators, leading to more accurate data collection. The development of this tool is a result of a recent Hackathon organized by the ministry, showcasing its commitment to integrating technology into statistical processes.

Commitment to Data-Driven Policymaking

The launch of the Microdata Portal, the National Statistical System Training Academy website, and the AI-driven classification tool underscores MOSPI’s dedication to utilizing the latest technological advancements for effective data management. These initiatives aim to foster a more data-driven approach to policymaking, ensuring that government interventions are precise and context-specific. Ultimately, these efforts contribute to the broader goal of Viksit Bharat, promoting sustainable development through informed decision-making.
