India Supports Balanced Energy Mix and Price Stability Amid Global Energy Volatility
Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri addressed the challenges posed by global energy volatility during the inauguration of India Energy Week in Goa. He highlighted that while fuel prices have surged in many countries due to geopolitical tensions, India has managed to protect its citizens from severe price increases. Puri emphasized the importance of collaboration with other nations to ensure a secure and inclusive energy future, while also acknowledging the ongoing transition to renewable energy sources.
Global Energy Landscape and India’s Role
Puri pointed out that the current global energy landscape is marked by significant volatility, driven by geopolitical factors. He noted that many major economies are experiencing sharp increases in fuel prices, yet India has successfully shielded its population from the worst impacts. The minister stressed that India recognizes the rising energy demands of developing nations and is committed to fostering international cooperation. He called for a collective effort to build a resilient energy future that balances innovation with shared responsibility among countries.
During his speech, Puri also addressed the need for a strategic partnership in energy, particularly with the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Sultan Al Jaber, the UAE Minister for Industry and Advanced Technology, echoed this sentiment, stating that India’s rapid growth necessitates a long-term and flexible partnership. Both leaders acknowledged that while India is making strides in renewable energy, conventional fuels will continue to play a vital role in meeting the country’s energy needs.
Investment and Energy Transition
Puri warned against the dangers of under-investment in the oil and gas sector. He highlighted that halting investment in existing production could lead to a significant decline in global oil output, potentially losing more than the combined annual production of Brazil and Norway over the next decade. This underscores the critical need for sustained investment to ensure energy security and meet growing demand.
The minister also discussed the rapid expansion of renewable energy, noting that its share in the global energy mix has increased from one-fifth a decade ago to nearly one-third today. However, he emphasized that conventional energy sources remain essential. Puri argued that energy transition, security, and system resilience must progress in tandem, and that a balanced approach is necessary to address the challenges of rising energy demand.
India’s Energy Strategy and Future Outlook
As the world’s third-largest energy consumer, India is actively working to enhance its energy capacity and improve market conditions. Puri stated that the government is committed to supporting a diverse energy mix through reforms and investments. He described India Energy Week as a significant platform for global energy dialogue, cooperation, and leadership, highlighting its importance in shaping the future of energy.
Al Jaber reinforced the idea that reliable partnerships are crucial in navigating the complexities of the global energy market. He urged leaders to focus on the long-term opportunities presented by rising energy demand rather than being swayed by short-term volatility. The UAE-India relationship, characterized by trust and strategic collaboration, is seen as a model for fostering growth and progress in the energy sector.
