India Stands with Nepal Amidst Devastating Flash Floods
The Central Government is closely monitoring the situation following severe flash floods in Nepal that have caused significant devastation. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has communicated with the Chief Ministers of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, highlighting the tragedy and offering condolences to families affected by the disaster. He emphasized India’s support for Nepal during this critical time.
In a recent post, Shah expressed his sorrow over the calamity, stating, “The devastation caused by the floods in Nepal is deeply tragic. My condolences are with the families who have lost loved ones in this disaster.” He reassured that the Government of India stands firmly alongside Nepal as they navigate this crisis.
Reports from the Central Water Commission (CWC) indicate a sudden increase in water levels of the Trishuli River at Furke Khola in Nepal, approximately 160 km from the Indian border, likely due to flash flood and glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) activities near the Nepal-China border. The resultant flooding is expected to impact the downstream flow into the Gandak River, affecting regions in India.
Both Bihar and Uttar Pradesh have initiated essential evacuation measures and are providing support to communities near the India-Nepal border. Authorities in these states have been urged to remain vigilant and keep close tabs on the evolving situation.
Officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Jal Shakti, and Ministry of Defence are actively monitoring developments. According to the CWC, water levels in reservoirs on the Nepalese side are declining, and the situation is reportedly under control, with no signs of public panic.
Concerns have also emerged regarding missing Indian tourists in Nepal. The Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu have set up emergency contact numbers to assist and provide information for Indian nationals affected by the floods.
