India Sees Surge in Foreign Tourist Arrivals
The tourism sector in India is on the rise, with foreign tourist arrivals (FTAs) showing a steady increase over the past five years. This growth is positively impacting the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), as revealed by recent data presented by Union Minister for Culture and Tourism, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, in Lok Sabha.
According to statistics from the Bureau of Immigration, FTAs have remarkably increased from 27,44,766 in 2020 to an impressive 99,51,722 in 2024. This upward trend indicates a recovery and growing interest in India as a travel destination in recent years. The Ministry of Tourism has highlighted the correlation between the rise in FTAs and the tourism sector’s contribution to the nation’s economy.
Top States for Foreign Tourist Visits
In a breakdown of data compiled from various States and Union Territories, Maharashtra comes out on top as the most visited state by foreign tourists in 2024. Following closely are West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and Rajasthan, showcasing the diverse appeal of India’s tourist attractions.
Global Collaborations Expand Tourism Potential
The Ministry of Tourism is actively working with international organizations including UNWTO, ASEAN, G20, BRICS, and PATA to enhance its global tourism strategy. Currently, there are 46 active Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) that facilitate bilateral and multilateral tourism cooperation, signaling India’s commitment to creating strong global tourism ties.
Promoting India’s Rich Tourism Landscape
To further enrich tourism, the Ministry promotes a wide array of tourist destinations and experiences, including some lesser-known gems. This is accomplished through various initiatives, such as a strong online presence, social media campaigns, and support for State Governments in organizing fairs and festivals. Participation in significant international travel fairs—like the World Travel Mart in London and ITB Berlin—enables India to showcase its extensive tourism offerings, including unique niches like wellness and adventure tourism.
These efforts are integral to reinforcing the “Incredible India” brand, bolstering global visibility, and creating opportunities for business-to-business meetings with foreign tour operators and stakeholders. As the tourism landscape evolves, India’s strategic engagements and promotional activities aim to continue attracting more international visitors.
Tourism’s Economic Impact
Statistics further illustrate the tourism sector’s influence on the economy. From a mere ₹29,617,002 lakh in 2020-21 to an estimated ₹1,57,372,988 lakh in 2023-24, the tourism GDP’s steady recovery highlights its vital role in the country’s economic fabric, accounting for about 5.2% of the GDP.
