India Makes History with First Jet Fuel Export to the US West Coast

Amid ongoing trade negotiations, India has made a significant move by exporting jet fuel to the United States’ West Coast for the first time. This shipment, which consists of 60,000 metric tons of aviation fuel, was dispatched from Jamnagar port between October 28 and 29. The fuel is destined for Chevron, a major energy company, and comes in response to supply shortages caused by operational disruptions at Chevron’s El Segundo refinery in California.

Details of the Shipment

The aviation fuel cargo, totaling 60,000 metric tons (equivalent to 472,800 barrels), originated from the Reliance Industries refinery. The vessel carrying the shipment, named Hafnia Kallang, is a Panamax tanker chartered by Castleton Commodities. It is expected to arrive in Los Angeles in early December. The export opportunity arose due to supply constraints in Los Angeles, following an incident at Chevron’s El Segundo refinery, which has a capacity of 285,000 barrels per day. This disruption affected multiple units within the facility, leading to a temporary shortage of jet fuel in the region.

Chevron has indicated that repairs at the El Segundo facility are projected to be completed by early 2026. Until then, jet fuel availability on the US West Coast is likely to remain limited. In an official statement, Chevron emphasized its commitment to supplying customers globally, including those reliant on the El Segundo refinery, and mentioned the possibility of utilizing local or imported products to meet demand.

Market Implications

The recent shipment from India may not signal a regular influx of jet fuel imports to the US West Coast. Industry experts suggest that more cost-effective options are available from Northeast Asia, making regular imports from India unlikely. Transport costs for refined fuels from South Korea to the US West Coast have remained stable at $40 per ton since October. In contrast, spot freight rates for shipments between India and the US West Coast are not commonly available due to the infrequent use of this route.

In the previous month, jet fuel exports from Northeast Asia to the US West Coast reached a five-month high, totaling approximately 600,000 tons, according to Kpler shiptracking data. The current market conditions are favorable, with US West Coast jet fuel prices exceeding Singapore’s spot free on board prices by $10 per barrel. As of November 7, US West Coast jet fuel inventories were reported at their lowest level in three months, totaling 11.12 million barrels.

Future Outlook

The ongoing repairs at Chevron’s El Segundo refinery are expected to have a lasting impact on jet fuel availability in the region. As the facility works towards resuming full operations, the market will continue to feel the effects of limited supply. Chevron’s focus remains on meeting customer needs, which may involve sourcing jet fuel from alternative suppliers during the repair period.

While the recent export from India marks a notable development in international trade relations, the long-term implications for jet fuel imports from India to the US West Coast remain uncertain. The competitive pricing of jet fuel from Northeast Asia may deter regular shipments from India, despite the current supply constraints. As the situation evolves, stakeholders in the aviation and energy sectors will be closely monitoring the developments at the El Segundo refinery and the broader market dynamics.
