India Launches WAVES to Showcase Cultural Creativity
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in India has taken a significant step towards promoting the country’s rich cultural heritage. On a momentous day at the National Media Centre in New Delhi, Union Ministers Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw and Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat unveiled several initiatives in anticipation of the World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit (WAVES). This summit aims to position India as a global leader in the creative economy, showcasing its diverse storytelling, music, and artistic talents.
Celebrating India’s Cultural Heritage
During the launch, Union Minister of Culture and Tourism, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, emphasized the importance of India’s cultural heritage. He described the country as a vibrant hub of storytellers, musicians, and content creators. “Our cultural heritage is not just a testament to our past but the backbone of our future on the global stage,” he stated. This initiative aims to leverage India’s rich cultural tapestry to gain global recognition.
The WAVES platform aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s vision of empowering India’s creative talents economically. As India progresses in various sectors, its cultural prowess remains a vital asset. Shekhawat expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting for launching WAVES, which he believes will enhance the global standing of India’s cultural diversity. This initiative aims to integrate the cultural creative economy into the world’s formal economy, allowing creators to gain respect and recognition on an international level.
The Vision Behind WAVES
The launch of WAVES is part of a broader strategy to highlight India’s creative economy, which is rich in tradition and storytelling. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw echoed the Prime Minister’s vision of establishing WAVES as a summit of global repute, similar to the Davos Economic Forum. He noted that this initiative is crucial for showcasing India’s cultural significance, often referred to as the ‘Orange Economy.’
Vaishnaw remarked, “Our rich culture, which once resonated in the halls of the Chicago World’s Fair through Swami Vivekananda, is today being carried forward by our Prime Minister on the global stage.” He emphasized that WAVES is an extension of this effort, aiming to make India the global capital of the creator economy. This vision reflects a commitment to promoting India’s cultural assets and ensuring they receive the recognition they deserve.
Initiatives Launched at WAVES
At the launch event, several initiatives were introduced to foster creativity and innovation within the Indian film and entertainment industry. The Union Ministers announced the WAVES Bazaar, three “Create in India” challenges, and the WAVES Awards. Additionally, a new challenge was introduced to promote films that explore India’s rich tourism and cultural heritage. This initiative encourages filmmakers to delve into the nation’s vibrant cultural tapestry, showcasing it to both national and international audiences.
These challenges aim to stimulate creativity and global participation. They provide a platform for creators to express their talents while highlighting India’s diverse cultural landscape. The presence of notable figures, including Indian filmmaker Shri Shekhar Kapur and Shri Gaurav Dwivedi, CEO of Prasar Bharati, underscored the importance of this initiative. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is committed to supporting these efforts, ensuring that India’s cultural narrative is shared and celebrated worldwide.
