India Launches ORV Sagar Manthan to Boost Ocean Research
Kolkata, September 09, 2026 — India has reached a significant milestone in its quest for self-reliance in oceanographic research and maritime technology with the launch of the advanced Ocean Research Vessel (Yard 3041), officially named ORV Sagar Manthan. The vessel was unveiled today at the Rishi Bankim Shipyard in Kolkata, marking a pivotal step forward in scientific exploration and environmental stewardship.
The ORV Sagar Manthan was designed and built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE), a defense public sector unit, in collaboration with the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR) under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES). The launch ceremony was attended virtually by Dr. Jitendra Singh, the Hon’ble Minister of Earth Sciences, and his wife, Mrs. Manju Singh, who honored the tradition by naming the vessel. Dr. T. Srinivasa Kumar, Secretary of the MoES, joined the event alongside his spouse, Mrs. Kavita Ellanti.
During his keynote address, Dr. Jitendra Singh described the event as a “red letter day” for India’s ocean research initiatives, appreciating the swift progress made by GRSE in launching the vessel within two years of the contract signing. He emphasized that the ORV Sagar Manthan represents India’s commitment to Atmanirbharta, or self-reliance, and highlighted the strategic and scientific importance of this vessel in understanding ocean dynamics and climate change.
Dr. Singh noted that the state-of-the-art ORV Sagar Manthan will gradually replace the aging ORV Sagar Kanya, which has served for 43 years. He expressed confidence that this new vessel will play a vital role in enhancing India’s capabilities in global ocean geopolitics and disaster management, as well as environmental protection.
Enhanced Scientific Capabilities
Echoing similar sentiments, Dr. T. Srinivasa Kumar reiterated the importance of transitioning from foreign-acquired research platforms to indigenous production. He pointed out that the ORV Sagar Manthan is equipped with cutting-edge technology that will aid in crucial oceanographic research, including climate change studies and tsunami forecasting. The vessel will utilize advanced equipment like dynamic positioning systems and multibeam bathymetry, making it a powerful tool for multidisciplinary exploration.
Project Overview and Features
Constructed under the Government of India’s Deep Ocean Mission at an estimated cost of Rs. 840 crore, the ORV Sagar Manthan is designed for operation in extreme oceanic environments, including the Southern Ocean, with an impressive service life of 30 years. The vessel’s technical features include dual-class certification by the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), ensuring it meets international standards.
Following the successful launch, the vessel will undergo further construction, system integration, and extensive sea trials ahead of its scheduled delivery to NCPOR/MoES in 2028. The event concluded with a formal plaque unveiling and the successful transfer of the vessel into water, emphasizing India’s commitment to advancing in ocean research.
